The executions were documented in video footage, and are described as part of a longstanding pattern of punishment against suspected collaborators. The situation in Gaza remains unstable, with no functioning government institutions and ongoing clashes between Hamas and other armed groups. Efforts to implement a peace plan and recover the bodies of Israeli hostages are ongoing.

The disturbing images are part of a long pattern of punishment meted out to suspected collaborators, says Israeli hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin. Hamas is killing them because they can. Hamas is a criminal organization that has ruled the Palestinian people in Gaza for almost 20 years. This is not a democratic, liberal regime. We've seen clashes between Hamas and these armed gangs. How much of a threat is that? Israel has empowered, with weapons and money, gangs of Palestinians who were involved in mostly illegal activities in the past, selling drugs, illegal smuggling, and they've empowered them as an alternative to Hamas. This is not sustainable. President Trump had this to say. They did take out a couple of gangs that were very bad, very, very bad gangs. And that didn't bother me much, to be honest with you. The US peace deal calls for an interim governing body headed by President Trump, but that has yet to be established. There is no governance in Gaza. There are no schools. There are no government ministries. There's nowhere for anyone to go to get any help. There is a vacuum of governance in Gaza right now. Deborah Pater, CBS News, East Jerusalem.
