A transitional council composed of military officers will govern until elections are organized, a process that could take up to two years. The coup follows weeks of protests by young people frustrated by chronic shortages, corruption, and unemployment. While some citizens welcomed the military's intervention, others expressed concern that the coup could undermine constitutional order and lead to further instability.

The day began with Parliament moving to impeach President Rajuel and remove him from office. But the decisive moment came when Colonel Mikhail Randrianirina, head of the elite Capsat military unit, announced the armed forces had seized power. We will take power starting today and dissolve, starting today, the Senate, the High Constitutional Court, the High Court of Justice, the High Council for the Defence of Democracy and the Rule of Law and the Independent National Electoral Commission. There you go, the National Assembly, we let it work, we continue to work and that's it. For weeks young protesters, largely members of what's been called Gen Z Madagascar, have been on the streets demanding change. Their anger, a response to chronic electricity and water shortages, corruption and high unemployment. On Monday night, Rajuel made a last-ditch effort to hang on to power, addressing people on social media. A transitional council made up of officers from the military will now govern until elections are held. But that may take as long as two years. Many greeted the soldiers with cheers, hoping this marks a break from past failures in governance. For now, Madagascar is without a president. As night falls, senior members of the military are meeting with politicians in the building just behind me. The hopes of millions of people in Madagascar now rest on talks being held behind closed doors. For many, the ouster of Ander Rajuel is enough. I'm happy now. For 16 years he did nothing but cause us suffering. He was a dictator, so it is now better because the military has taken power. Thanks a lot to the military. We are the youth and we need jobs. Because of the president, we don't have work. I'm 28 years old and I have never worked during the time of Rajuel. I don't know much, but the military knows what it's doing. While many celebrate, others warn the coup threatens constitutional order and could plunge the nation into deeper instability.

As a fragile ceasefire takes hold, rival gangs are attacking each other and Hamas inside Gaza. The violence has some Palestinians fearing for their lives. U.S. President Donald Trump had given Hamas permission to police the streets of Gaza in the early days of the ceasefire with Israel but he has since reiterated that he will force Hamas to comply with disarmament.
