WA cyclone intensifies, warning issued

Emergency services had a pretty stark warning for people today and that warning was directed at people who are staying in caravans or are camping in that long stretch of coast between Broome and Port Hedland. They're being told to pack up and get out now because authorities don't want people travelling on that road tomorrow. Even though the Category 4 system isn't expected to reach the coast until late Thursday or the early hours of Friday, it's expected we could have gale force winds and heavy rain into tomorrow. So authorities want to make sure that those roads don't have tourists or other vehicles going up and down them. Authorities have also been in close contact with those pastoral stations and also the people who manage those caravan parks and other tourism accommodation about whether they're going to stay or go. And if they are going to stay, are the accommodation and housing they're in, will it stand up to a Category 4 cyclone? Are those homes built to strength? So we did hear from the Department for Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson Darren Clem and here's what he had to say. This system will bring extreme conditions and I strongly urge the local community to finish their preparations today. People in caravans need to leave the warning area and if you are planning on travelling to the Pilbara or Kimberley coast, consider your plans. One of the other big impacts that's expected to come from this cyclone that authorities are warning about is the fact that roads could become cut off, especially the Great Northern Highway. There's an expectation that could become cut off south of Broome for several days. So authorities have been working with supermarkets to make sure they're well stocked, given there has been extra pressure on those supermarkets as people stock up for enough supplies to last them over the coming days. There's also concern that other roads that are going out to outlying Indigenous communities could also be cut off for quite some time because this system is expected to dump hundreds of millimetres of rain in certain parts of the Pilbara. Authorities have also been in close contact with Indigenous communities to make sure that vulnerable residents such as children and people with medical conditions can be flown out to make sure they're not there when the full brunt of the cyclone comes in. And also on mine sites, a lot of workers there have been evacuated and many mine sites have drawn down to skeleton staff just so they can keep an eye on the essential infrastructure, especially around the community of Telfer which is mainly a mining community. It looks like that could be bearing some severe brunt of the cyclone, even if it isn't a category four strong winds, just those gale force winds and heavy rains could really impact Telfer as well. So today really is a big day for authorities to try and get as many of those preparations done as possible before tomorrow that heavy rain and those gale force winds start lashing the region.
