Fires in Toolangi, Victoria, have resulted in significant destruction, with over 30 homes, businesses, and structures lost and more than 300,000 hectares burned across 18 local government areas and one alpine resort. Authorities have declared a state of disaster, activated emergency relief payments, and brought in additional personnel from interstate to support ongoing firefighting and recovery efforts.

Evacuations have saved lives, though many residents have returned to find their properties destroyed. Emergency services continue to face hazardous conditions, with several firefighters injured and infrastructure damaged. A total fire ban remains in effect, and residents are advised to stay informed and avoid affected areas until they are declared safe.

Taylor, conditions have eased. This time yesterday it was about 43 degrees, now it's just under 30. But firefighters will still be battling the blaze well into the night, and as you're about to see, some residents today made the heart-wrenching journey home. Jamie and Anne fought for as long as they could. We were going to stay and defend, and if you stay and defend, you're supposed to win. Determined not to lose the roughy home, they've spent two years renovating. And when we didn't win, just leaving was heartbreaking. Their determination was no match for a raging inferno that near devoured their township. Walking through what little remains of their dream home, the couple say it hasn't fully sunk in. It got me this morning, I was out there with the animals on my hands and knees. This is one of 30 homes, businesses and structures destroyed in the Longwood fire. Burnt out cars and properties still smouldering. Others fought alongside firefighters and won the battle. They come undead too and worked all bloody night with them. Non-stop at it until we got it. Like, that's all we could do. As conditions ease, the clean-up begins. But it's still too early to realise the extent of the region's losses. The numbers are dire, forcing the Premier to enact a state of disaster late last night. Across 18 local government areas and one alpine resort, more than 300,000 hectares of Victoria has been blackened. Half of that in the Longwood fire alone. Three people previously unaccounted for are safe. Police confirming the three adults are Benalla locals. I know how hard it is to leave your home, not knowing when or what you will return to. But it has saved lives. State and federal governments have activated emergency relief with one-off payments of $2,380 per family. I want all Victorians to know that the federal government has your back. Further funding will be provided for livestock, feed and structural losses once the full impact of the fires is assessed. And the situation is far from over. 160 personnel have been brought in from interstate, with the Emergency Management Commissioner calling in more manpower over the coming days. Many of these major fires will continue to burn for days, if not weeks. Three CFA members have been seriously injured, including one suffering severe burns. A CFA tanker also destroyed. Roads across northern Victoria have been blocked by thousands of fallen trees, which CFA and other authorities are currently working to clear, which could take days, if not weeks. The risks are mammoth and endless, as firefighters brave ever-changing and unpredictable catastrophic conditions. Please stay away from those fire footprints until we declare them safe to return.
