The United States has maintained bases on the island since World War II, under agreements with Denmark that allow near-unlimited access for US military activities, subject to Danish consent.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed readiness to work with the US on Arctic security, while US officials have cited concerns about potential Chinese and Russian interests in the region. However, there is no evidence of a military build-up by either country in Greenland, and analysts note that the island's mineral resources are largely inaccessible.

Greenland has been an obsession for Donald Trump since his first term in office and he has been increasingly explicit about taking over the autonomous Danish territory with or without force. We need Greenland for national security purposes. I've been told that for a long time, long before I even ran. I mean people have been talking about it for a long time. The United States has had a military presence in Greenland since the second world war when the Danish government in exile signed an agreement with Washington for the defence of the island. This was cemented by the Defence of Greenland Treaty of 1951. The US has maintained a number of military facilities in Greenland ever since, the sole remaining one being the Putific Space Base on the north west of the island. Article 2 of the 1951 treaty gives Washington near unlimited access to Greenland to construct military facilities and send troops, in coordination with Danish authorities. A 2004 amendment requires the consent of Copenhagen but this is widely viewed as a formality. The agreement in place as well as the political goodwill that goes with it in the practical implementation of that agreement means that the US would probably be able to get more or less anything it needs in Greenland by just asking nicely. That is a view echoed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who says her government is prepared to work with the US. If you want to be more present in Greenland, Greenland and Denmark is ready. And if you would like to strengthen the security in the Arctic, just like us, then let us do it together. Donald Trump has said China and Russia also have designs on Greenland, but despite a number of Chinese investments in the territory, there is no evidence of a military build-up by either country. Some analysts have said that Trump's real motive for seizing Greenland is to get access to its mineral resources, but they are mostly to be found in inhospitable terrain that would be very difficult to access.
