Chancellor Mertz's visit to India was expected to be a balancing act between economic and geopolitical issues, but first came the diplomatic pleasantries. Mertz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi started by visiting the Sabarmati Ashram, the one-time residence of Mahatma Gandhi. They then attended the International Kite Festival, marking the transition from winter to summer, flying kites from their open-top car. But it wasn't all kites and smiles. There was business to be done. They signed several agreements, including bilateral defence, critical mineral extraction, recruitment for the German healthcare system, and green and renewable energy. The close cooperation between economies like India and Germany is very important for humanity. Our bilateral trade has reached its highest level, exceeding the 50 billion dollar mark. The sticky topic of Russia inevitably reared its head. India is one of the world's largest arms importers, with more than a third coming from Russia. That share is declining, and Germany hopes to reduce it further. One of the biggest deals, some 8 billion euros, would see German engineering firm ThyssenKrupp construct six submarines for the Indian Navy, and it would include technology transfer for submarine production for the very first time. Amid an uncertain geopolitical reality, Europe is eyeing the US more warily than ever and is looking for more reliable partners. Particularly in view of the profound geopolitical changes and upheavals in the world, we share a fundamental interest in deepening our strategic partnership. As important as Europe and transatlantic relations remain for us Germans, we must now establish a further, larger network of partnerships and do so quickly and with staying power. Chats even floated the possibility of the EU and India finally signing a free trade agreement two decades in the making. And with a summit coming later this month, both sides will be looking to serve the mutual wave of goodwill.
