Former President Bill Clinton did not appear before a House committee to testify on the Jeffrey Epstein matter, despite a bipartisan subpoena. Hillary Clinton, whose deposition was scheduled for the following day, also indicated she would not attend, citing their belief that the proceedings were politically motivated.

The House Oversight Committee, chaired by James Comer, announced plans to pursue contempt proceedings against both Clintons for failing to comply. The Clintons argued they had little information to offer and criticized the process as a political ploy, while the committee maintained that all witnesses are expected to appear when subpoenaed.

Former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton say they will not testify before a House committee on the Jeffrey Epstein matter. That of course comes as today is the deadline for Bill Clinton to make that appearance. The former First Lady's deadline is tomorrow. A lot of photos of former President Clinton have surfaced in troves of documents recently released by the Justice Department. A Clinton spokesperson previously said the former president did not know about Jeffrey Epstein's crimes and went on to say that the Trump administration should release all files related to Mr. Epstein. I think everyone knows by now Bill Clinton did not show up and I think it's important to note that this subpoena was voted on in a bipartisan manner by this committee. This wasn't something that I just issued as chairman of the committee. We will move next week in the House Oversight Committee markup to hold former President Clinton in contempt. CBS News Congressional Correspondent Nicole Killian live on Capitol Hill. So what's next here? We got a little foretelling in that soundbite, Nicole. Yeah, well obviously the chairman of the Oversight Committee, James Comer, made clear that the committee will move forward in holding former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady and Secretary of State, in contempt based on not showing up today. Now obviously in terms of Hillary Clinton, her deposition is scheduled for tomorrow but there is expectation that she will not show based on the letter that she and her husband submitted to the House Oversight Committee. Take a look at their rationale for not appearing today. They posted on X at the same time saying that this is not about right or left, it's about right or wrong and in the statement to the committee they said every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences for us, now is that time. And so they went on to suggest that Chairman Comer was really using this process in a politically motivated fashion to try to embarrass them and bring them before the committee. They say they don't have much information to provide with respect to Jeffrey Epstein and that in other instances they have either dismissed other witnesses or allowed them for instance to provide written testimony so they simply saw this more as a political ploy. For his part though, Chairman Comer said, look, this was a unanimous vote to subpoena the Clintons and it was a bipartisan vote. So from that standpoint he had every expectation that they, just like any other witness, should show up and be compelled to show up. So there certainly was some disappointment on the part of the Chairman, which is why he says he and his panel will move forward with contempt.
