France's newly founded anti-organized crime unit has, alongside regional prosecutors, taken on the investigation. But already officials say that the 71-year-old was killed by a single shot from a long distance. Alain Orsoni was known for his nationalist past, business endeavours, and his family's links to organized crime. I'll be speaking to the court, pardon me, can I get by? The former leader of the Corsica National Liberation Front, he rose in its ranks after his brother was assassinated in 1983. Amidst infighting in the nationalist movement, he spent several years in exile in the 1990s, before returning to become president of the Athletic Club of Agaxio. At the time, he said his life was in danger. I am fearful for my life. A target has been put on me. I feel I've been picked as the future victim. Alain Orsoni's son, Guy, is currently serving a 13-year sentence for the attempted assassination of a rival. And now, Alain Orsoni's murder is another reminder of the long-continuing presence of organized crime on the island.

Analysts say the discussions could be pivotal in clarifying U.S. intentions, easing tensions and reinforcing commitments to Greenland’s sovereignty in the face of strategic interests from Washington.
