The campus atmosphere remains somber, with students and staff expressing feelings of shock and a loss of safety. Many are still processing the tragedy, with some students recalling their proximity to the incident and the emotional impact it has had on their daily routines.

The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, made his first court appearance virtually. Investigators revealed that Robinson had expressed intentions to target Kirk, leaving a note and communicating his plans to both his parents and roommate. His parents played a key role in identifying him as the suspect and persuading him to turn himself in, with assistance from a family friend who is a sheriff.

Welcome back. Classes resumed today at Valley University, Utah Valley University, I should say, one week after a gunman killed activist Charlie Kirk at an event on campus. Now, the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, made his first virtual court appearance yesterday. CBS News legal reporter Katrina Kaufman joins us now from the Amphitheater on campus there at Valley University in Orem, Utah. Katrina, this is right next to where Charlie Kirk was shot. Good morning to you. Before we talk about the suspect's court appearance, how are people on campus feeling as they head back to class this morning on what was a crime scene? Good morning, Errol. So yes, right over here is where Charlie Kirk was shot. And then, I don't know if you can see in frame, but behind me, people have been gathering all morning and reflecting here. Students, professors, I've talked to a number of them, and they've said what a heavy feeling there is on this campus now, how it's somber, it feels more ghostly than it used to be. Most of them do not feel ready to come back to school, although at the same time, Errol, they say that probably they'll never quite feel ready, and whenever the first day will be, it will be hard. One freshman who I was speaking to studies nursing, he said he was sitting on a table over there when Kirk was shot. He knew immediately that he wouldn't survive, and he said to me that it's just dark knowing the place where I used to eat lunch with my buddy is now stained with blood. He also commented that he was so relieved he had made it through high school without having any school shootings, and then it happened here at UVU, of all places. That's what some of the other people have said, is this was a place where they felt safe, where they never expected something like this to happen. Yeah, and that sense of safety has been shattered, and they will want answers as to why this happened. Yesterday, we heard about the charges and some details from the investigation. What is new on that front and a potential motive? Errol, we learned quite a bit yesterday. For one, in terms of a potential motive, we learned that Robinson told both his parents and his roommate in different exchanges that he felt that Charlie Kirk was spreading hate and needed to be stopped. He had actually left a note under his keyboard that he had the roommate fine that said he had an opportunity to kill Charlie Kirk, and he was planning to take it. We saw this text exchange between the two of them where he talks about how he wants to go back and get the rifle. He planned to take this to his grave, he said, and he thought that if the rifle wasn't found, that he wouldn't be caught, Errol. Also, his parents played an integral role in figuring out that it was him who did this and getting him to turn himself in. His mother thought that she recognized him in photos that were released of the suspect. She showed it to his father. When she called him, he said that he had been home sick and that he was the day of the murder, too. She was still concerned. His father ended up asking him for a photo of a rifle that had been gifted to him, and he wouldn't send it. Ultimately, as they were talking to him, he said that he was thinking of taking his own life, that he didn't want to go to prison, but they convinced him to come home, and then a family friend who was a sheriff also helped to convince him to turn himself in, Errol. Yeah, remarkable that the family helped him make the decision to turn himself in. We'll continue to watch this all very closely. Katrina Kaufman there on campus in Orem, Utah. Thank you.
