Elementary kind of shapes how you're going to do in the future. That's like your first stepping stone. That first step looks different at American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork, where families are working to give kids more opportunities like a wrestling program for their elementary school students, and more after school art and music classes. The school is planning its fall festival, a fundraiser to pay for new playground equipment, upgraded art supplies, and even a fresh coat of paint. You know, everyone looks at our uniforms and sees our beautiful kids. We are in a low-income area, and it's important to bring the community together to just really provide a stable and positive environment for our kids. The event will include food trucks. A portion of the sales will go to things like new basketballs and jump ropes, and art supplies like clay, paper, paintbrushes, and paint. Sosa says they've secured a couple trucks so far. Our goal is to have four, but if we could build a school drop-off lane, then we'll take as many as we can. This year also marks the school's 20th anniversary. It's a great way for our ALA alumni to come back to school and kind of show their kids where they grew up. They got to see what playground that they played on, and so we're hoping to build something new for their kids. But behind the public charter school celebration is a reality many Utah schools face. U.S. Census data shows Utah consistently spends less per student than almost every other state, leaving families and teachers looking to fill the gap. While American Leadership Academy receives state funding, the school says that raising money can be harder in a low-income community. You see more and more teachers having to pull out of their own paychecks and provide, whether it's school supplies or just fun decorations for the kids. For this school, a night of food and fun is one more stepping stone to a brighter future. It's really exciting and fun.
