Utah has implemented a law requiring all school districts to provide firearm safety education to students from kindergarten through high school. The law stipulates that students must receive lessons at least three times in elementary school, once in middle school, and once in high school. The curriculum, which has previously been available to older students, will now be introduced to elementary grades as well. 

The lessons are designed to teach students how to respond safely if they encounter a firearm, emphasizing awareness and decision-making rather than the use of firearms. School districts, such as Granite School District, are preparing age-appropriate materials, including videos, to integrate into their annual safety programs. The aim is to ensure all students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle such situations safely.

Hey, that's a gun. Whoa. Nobody touches the gun. This gun safety video, found on the Utah Attorney General's website, may soon be coming to a classroom near you. Hey, you want to see my dad's gun? What should you do? It's one tool for Utah school districts to satisfy the requirements of the firearm safety in school law. It requires school districts to provide firearm safety lessons to students at least three times between grades kindergarten through six, once while in middle school, and once while in high school. One of our standards is making healthy decisions. I spoke with Susan Marshall, the secondary health specialist in the Granite School District. She tells me this curriculum has already been available to teenage students, but it'll be a new addition in elementary schools. We've started vetting information ourselves, and we will be providing them an age-appropriate video to show with their annual safety programs. In the Granite School District, first, third, and fifth grade health lessons will include a gun safety lesson. If you're at a friend's house, is it stored properly? Is it put away? If you encounter it, these are the steps you should take. And to be clear, these lessons will not be about the safe use of firearms. It's more awareness of safety. If you come across one, if you encounter one, what do you do? Over the past several years, FOX 13 News has reported on Utah children who made the right decision when encountering a gun. This is the spot where two nine-year-olds found something extremely dangerous, but they knew what to do. We saw that there was a gun. Ran to my house and then told my mom. This curriculum aims to make sure all Utah children have the knowledge to make that same decision. And having them prepared with the skills or the resources or decision-making tools that they might need to handle it in the safest way possible is huge.
