Israeli media is reporting that Israeli and U.S. negotiators will not be joining those efforts until Wednesday at the earliest.

U.S. and Israeli officials have postponed their involvement in ongoing Gaza ceasefire discussions, according to reports citing Israeli media. Currently, mediators are holding talks with Hamas delegates, while U.S. and Israeli representatives are expected to join at a later stage. 

The negotiations are complicated by Israel's demands for the simultaneous release of all captives and its insistence that military operations will continue during the process. Political pressures, both domestic and international, are influencing the positions of Israeli leadership, with former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly urging swift progress. The outcome of these talks is seen as significant for both regional stability and the standing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump posted online saying, I am told that the first phase should be completed this week and I am asking everyone to move fast. I will continue to monitor this centuries-old conflict. Time is of the essence or massive bloodshed will follow, something that nobody wants to see. For more, we're joined by Noor Oday, who's in Amman. She is there because the Israeli government has banned Al Jazeera from reporting from Israel as well as the occupied West Bank. Despite Donald Trump saying that he wants everyone to move fast, we're now hearing from Israeli media that Israeli and US representatives won't actually be participating in these talks until Wednesday at the very earliest, basically leaving Hamas delegates speaking with mediators for the moment. Do we know why? Do we know any more? Well, Tom, there are a lot of details that could potentially derail the talks and everybody – especially Donald Trump, as we keep hearing from him on his Truth Social platform – is vested in making sure these talks succeed and that the Israeli captives are released. So there are logistical, practical details that need to be ironed out. And the hard-line position that Israel is taking about wanting all of the captives out at the same time, within 72 hours, that this is not a ceasefire, that Israel would continue to have freedom of movement, freedom to bomb, freedom to pursue Hamas, and that the withdrawal lines have already been set, all of these things need to undergo delicate talks. And I think that really points or explains why it will be the mediators who will first talk with Hamas, box it in, in a way, but at the same time try and preserve a momentum that everybody wants to see succeed, at least from the mediators' perspective. Noor, if you could just speak a little bit more broadly. Can you just explain, politically, what's at stake here for Benjamin Netanyahu? Because there's a real sense that Donald Trump is pushing him, forcing him into this peace deal. I mean, Donald Trump is making very public that he is the one pushing all the buttons here. And it's very difficult, if not impossible, for Netanyahu to challenge that. At the same time, Netanyahu understands that this is about a lot more than Gaza, as Donald Trump said. And that, in a way, has been able—he's been able to use that to temper down the reaction from his very right-wing coalition, which had no interest in ending the war. They didn't even consider the release of Israeli captives to be the priority. They wanted more war, to take over Gaza, to expel the population, and even take over the West Bank. So, for now, he has to maneuver all of that, keeping in mind that his chances of winning majority in elections, according to the polls, are not looking up. So, his coalition partners are also interested in keeping the coalition for now. There's a lot of damage control to be done domestically and internationally, and Donald Trump alluded to that. He told the Israeli media, Israel has suffered a lot on the international stage, and I'm going to fix it. This deal is going to fix it. So, for now, the focus is on the first phase, releasing the captives coinciding in or around the date of the two-year mark of this genocidal war. That will take attention or tension and pressure a little bit off of Netanyahu's shoulder. OK. Thank you so much, Nour El-Odei, for us there in Amman.
