Existing home sales in the United States increased by 5.1% in December, reaching a rate of 4.35 million units. This marks a significant gain from the previous month's 4.14 million, and is notable given the typically slower housing market during December.

The Mortgage Bankers Association also reported a substantial rise in mortgage applications, particularly for refinancing, which analysts attribute to the recent decline in mortgage rates. The data suggests renewed activity in the housing sector as borrowing costs decrease.

I think especially in light of the mortgage rate discussion and MBS purchases, et cetera, it's interesting, even more interesting to watch the housing sector. Well, we have seen rates come down some, and we have some good news on existing home sales. They're up 5.1% in the month of December, which is fairly strong considering that's a month when a lot of people aren't out buying houses. Real rate of $4.35 million, $4,350,000, I don't have a comparison on how much that is compared to previous months, but it is a reasonably strong number. It's up from $4.14 million, so a significant gain, and we did see the Mortgage Bankers Association report a big gain in mortgage applications last week and especially refis.
