The U.N. Security Council is holding an emergency meeting today to discuss Russian fighter jets illegally entering Estonian airspace on Friday. That incident follows military action by Poland shooting down Russian drones in its airspace two weeks ago. All this happening as the U.N. General Assembly gets underway. So to discuss this, I want to bring in former Ambassador John Sullivan. He's the former U.S. deputy secretary of state and former U.S. ambassador to Russia. Ambassador, always good to see you, sir. So let's talk about what can be accomplished at this week's meetings. Well, thanks, Vlad. Good to be with you again. Difficult to imagine that there's going to be anything accomplished with respect to Russia's war against Ukraine. This war is extending now, coming up on four years, and the U.N. has been powerless to the Security Council because of Russia's veto, powerless to take any significant action. So I'm not optimistic that there will really be anything that the U.N. will do this week that will have an effect on that terrible war in Europe. So as you know, Poland's prime minister says he will not hesitate, Poland will not hesitate, to shoot down objects that violate its airspace. What does that mean for Russia? What does that mean for the United States, given President Trump's often less than supportive comments about the NATO alliance? Well, the first and most important thing to recognize, as you point out, Vlad, is that Poland is a NATO ally. And if Poland is attacked or even something not quite as significant, if its airspace is violated, we have obligations, we the United States and other NATO allies, have obligations under the North Atlantic Treaty to, in this case with the airspace incursion, consult with Poland, so-called Article 4 consultations, which Poland has sought. My thinking, Vlad, is that this is Russia testing, testing Europe, testing Europe's unity and testing the United States commitment to its NATO allies. Will the United States forcefully back Poland in defending its airspace?
