The US recently cancelled $4.9 billion in foreign aid, including over $800 million earmarked for international peacekeeping, and has proposed eliminating its contribution entirely in the future.

The US is the largest financial supporter of UN peacekeeping, covering 27% of its budget. These cuts could impact the UN's ability to protect civilians in countries such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The US administration has also drastically reduced foreign aid through the US Agency for International Development, which has now been closed.

Earlier this year, the White House proposed to eliminate Washington's contribution entirely for 2026, citing the alleged failures of certain missions. There are currently 11 active UN peacekeeping operations, including the MINUSCA in the Central African Republic and the MONUSCO in the DRC. UN member states are obligated to help finance these missions. Donald Trump has drastically reduced US foreign aid since he came back in office. In February, his administration vowed to cut foreign aid contracts from the US Agency for International Development by more than 90%. The agency officially closed in July.
