Hurricane Gabrielle is set to steadily lose its tropical status on the way across the Atlantic to Spain, but what's going to happen next in the tropics?

Meteorologists are closely tracking two new tropical waves in the Atlantic following the passage of hurricane Gabrielle, which reached Category 4 status but is now moving east-northeast away from land. Gabrielle is expected to bring rain and wind to the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal and Spain, but will not impact land as a hurricane. Some rough seas and rip currents are anticipated along the US East Coast.

Attention is now focused on the two developing tropical waves. The eastern wave is expected to develop first, while the western wave has a higher chance of affecting the US. Experts are monitoring these systems closely, but simultaneous impacts from both are considered unlikely.

Two tropical waves could spell trouble after Gabrielle

As we take a look to the tropics, will Gabrielle a Category 4 hurricane as of 5 PM today? There's a powerhouse, yeah, but moving east northeast now and eventually more easterly, so it will bring some rain and wind, though it won't be a tropical system at the time. It is the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal and Spain. Yeah, no direct land impacts while it's at hurricane status. Some rip current, some rough seas for the East Coast of the US over the next 24 hours or so, but it's the next two tropical waves that we're really watching. Yeah, this is going to be problematic here. One of these will become Umberto most likely somewhat of a race against time. And counterintuitively, it's the eastern wave that has the earliest opportunity for development. Yeah, it's the Western wave that has the better chance of impacting the US, so we'll be watching closely. And if you're thinking, OK, do we get both at the same time? That is not the most likely scenario. Jeff's going to break down some of the more likely scenarios coming up in a couple minutes here.
