Two men have been sentenced for stealing over 60,000 limited edition Bluey-themed coins from a Sydney warehouse. The coins, highly sought after by collectors and children, were sold online for significantly more than their face value.

Steven Nielsen and Nasser Kanj were sentenced after pleading guilty to stealing more than 60,000 limited edition Bluey-themed dollar coins from a Sydney warehouse. The coins, which had not yet been released to the public, were sold online at prices far above their face value, depriving many young fans and collectors of access to the items.

Nielsen received a 33-month prison sentence, while Kanj was sentenced to 27 months. Both expressed remorse in court, with Kanj citing his motive as helping Nielsen and supporting his drug habit. Authorities are working to recover the stolen coins and return them to circulation. A third individual remains before the courts.

The friends of 30 years had been in cahoots, stealing more than 60,000 limited edition yet-to-be-released Bluey-themed dollar coins, ultimately robbing young fans of the highly prized collector's items. The theft of these coins have deprived a lot of young children and members of the community from having access to these coins. So we're doing our absolute best to try to recover these coins and put them back into circulation. There was big money to be made. Newly minted and so in demand were the coins. They were sold online for 10 times their face value. Stolen goods very quickly landed in innocent hands. If you are one of those lucky people to have come across one of those coins now, we don't even ask that you surrender that coin. It's in circulation now and that's no issue to us. Getting caught wasn't on these bandits' bingo card, but police very quickly tracked the pair down. The coins had been stolen from a warehouse where Nielsen worked. He was arrested first and his friend Kanj soon after. Both ended up pleading guilty to the charges laid against them. In sentencing today, Kanj tearfully told the court, I'm very sorry. Whatever I can do to make it up, I will. His motive, he revealed, was to help out his mate Nielsen and to support his own drug habit. Nielsen's lawyer also told the court his client was equally remorseful. For his role, Nielsen was sentenced to 33 months behind bars. He'll be eligible for release in April next year. Kanj was handed a 27-month sentence but he'll likely be home in time for Christmas. A third co-accused remains before the courts. Samara Gardner, 10 News.
