While many students turn to AI for homework help, one local tutoring center is helping students build critical thinking skills through traditional learning methods.

With the increasing use of AI tools such as ChatGPT for homework, some students and educators are concerned about the impact on critical thinking and independent learning. At Huntington Learning Center, students engage in one-on-one tutoring to strengthen skills in reading, writing, math, and science without relying on AI.

Educators and researchers note that heavy use of AI can hinder the development of essential skills. Tutoring center staff stress the importance of mastering basics, especially since standardized tests do not permit AI assistance. Students at the center report significant improvements in their academic abilities and encourage peers to focus on foundational learning.

It's .16. Many students are using chat GPT as a shortcut to finish their homework, but here at Huntington Learning Center, students are learning the old-fashioned way. I haven't even thought about chat GPT. Sixth-grader Harper-Clerk believes using AI too much can slow the development of her critical thinking skills in math, reading, writing and science. It's really important because, like, I want to be a veterinarian and you have to know how to, like, read essays and stuff. At Huntington Learning Center, students get to work one-on-one with a tutor. Harper says since coming here, her reading level has improved tremendously. I started on a second-grade level and in less than a year I have grown four years. School is back in session now and educators are more aware of the benefits and risks of students using AI. We looked at studies that found heavy AI use can cause declines in critical thinking and decision-making. Researchers say educators can help counter that by using authentic teaching methods like those at Huntington Learning Center. Okay, so how's the instruction going? Gonzalo Diaz-Infante is the owner of the center in High Park. Chat GPT is a great tool, but like every tool, if you use it too much, then you stop being able to do the thing independently on your own. Diaz-Infante says it's important for students to know the basic skills since they can't use AI on many tests, including the ACT and SAT. It's important that students know how to write a paper on their own because it forces them to think. It forces them to structure what they want to communicate.
