A Tsunami Advisory was downgraded to a Watch for the majority of Southern California on Wednesday.

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's far eastern coast, generating tsunami waves that reached Japan, Hawaii, and the west coast of the United States. Southern California was placed under a tsunami advisory, prompting concerns about coastal flooding and potential damage to boats and docks, particularly in Marina Del Rey.

Local authorities have now lifted the tsunami advisory for the region, and beaches in Orange and Los Angeles counties have reopened. While some residents noted slightly higher water levels and expressed concern, there have been no official reports of damage or casualties in Southern California.

Tsunami advisory lifted for most of SoCal

We do begin with this though the latest on one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded the 8.8 quake hit off of Russia's sparsely populated far east and there are reports of injuries there but so far no deaths have been reported. The quake sent tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii and the west coast of the United States. Here at home people along the coastline are breathing a sigh of relief as the tsunami advisory for southern California was dropped. Mario Mirez has the latest now from Marina Del Rey. It's very calm where you are, pretty serene Mario. It is, Andrea Cheng, good morning. No official reports of damage here in Marina Del Rey. Locals say the water level however is slightly higher than it usually is and here those tsunami alerts brought some serious concerns about coastal flooding and damage to some of the boats and docks here due to surging water moving in and out of the harbor. If the wave comes and it's really huge then all the docks would lift and float freely with all the boats just floating around all over the place and crashing against each other that would be terrible. The entire west coast of the United States was placed under a tsunami alert Tuesday night following a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia's eastern coast. This is not a surf wave, it's not a wind wave, a tsunami is the entire ocean column that is being lifted up above that high tide level there because of that extreme movement of the earth's crust with the earthquake. Some who came out here to Marina Del Rey overnight like they normally do say this time it was under rare conditions. Honestly I was I was a little freaked out but I mean nothing nothing too much you know what I'm saying like everybody at work was it was scary because we work by like by the beach like right here like right on the shore but everybody was like pretty scared. Just the levels the water levels are a little higher usually it's like really low but today it's it's a nice high tide and there's a bit of a stream going down that that way but you never know it could be that one day when it actually does hit and you know the waves start crashing down. Those people coming for a closer look others leaving the area. I heard about the tsunami and I'm seeing the difference in the riffle effect in the water. I'm about ready to push up out of here because I see the water coming and you never know. It's crazy yeah I mean it's a little scary. Definitely some nerves running here in these coastal communities now those tsunami alerts have officially been lifted and we're now hearing from both Orange and L.A.
