US President Donald Trump will travel to Kuala Lumpur to attend the ASEAN summit, with a focus on supporting a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. The summit comes after recent border disputes between the two countries, which resulted in skirmishes and a temporary ceasefire brokered in part by Trump.

Efforts are underway to formalize a more comprehensive peace deal, with both sides expressing concerns about border security and cross-border crime. Trade negotiations between the US and Thailand may hinge on the successful implementation of this ceasefire, as the US has indicated that progress on trade is contingent on peace between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

Yes, that'll be a Sunday, October 26, according to Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan, when US President Donald Trump will attend the ASEAN summit. And there's one thing that's very important, it seems, or high in the agenda of the American president, apart from trade talks with various ASEAN nations and also geopolitical issues. It's a ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia. Now, if you recall, Martin, back in May, shortly after the last ASEAN meeting actually in Kuala Lumpur, there was a border row that actually erupted between Thailand and Cambodia that resulted in a number of skirmishes, actually, that only ended after a ceasefire in July that was partially backed also by a phone call by President Trump to both countries to try and iron out that ceasefire. Now, there is an attempt now to try and at least lodge an even more stringent and more widespread ceasefire deal between the two countries, because while there is that existing ceasefire from July, tensions have remained high with both sides actually accusing the other of encroaching or breaching and violating some of the ceasefire agreements. Now, one thing that's also important to note here is that the American president himself has been on a bit of a diplomatic tour. He's fresh off of brokering, at least, or somewhat brokering the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. And if he can actually get this on the table also, then that also might bolster some of his claims to at least accede towards a Nobel Peace Prize. Interestingly enough, Cambodia actually also nominated and supported the American president, Donald Trump's attempts at least, or push at least, to be nominated for that Nobel Peace Prize because of his role in brokering that ceasefire deal. You can see here just where some of the few flashpoints actually were, and we'll see what actually transpires when he does arrive, but definitely a ceasefire deal could be on the cards. But remember that Thailand has a number of issues, or at least demands to make sure that this is done. Among them, actually enforcing cross-border crime, which could have something to do with online scam centers, Martin, and also the clearance of landmines that they claim Cambodia planted. And of course, Cambodia vehemently denies. If all this happens, though, it seems a ceasefire might be on the cards, and again, this could be another feather in the cap that the American president can also claim to. All right, and you're going to be right in the thick of it because you're flying up for the ASEAN summit, I know. If we do not see a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia at the summit, though, how potentially could President Trump take that? Could it affect trade negotiations with other Southeast Asian nations? Well, the thing about this, Martin, is that when he did have that phone call with Thailand and Cambodia, he clearly stated, and this was before the August 8 deadline for those tariffs, he said, no ceasefire, no trade deals, actually, which may have actually made them come to the table a lot quicker and actually sign off on that ceasefire in late July. Now, it has also been indicated by the spokesperson for the new Thai prime minister that it will be, was indeed indicated also that the ceasefire is going to be key for Thailand if they want to achieve any more progress with regards to a trade deal to bring that down to 19%. Keep in mind, we also have a new prime minister in Thailand, and he has appointed his deputy prime minister, Etinee Nittitanprapas, actually, as the head of the new trade delegation to negotiate with Trump, and they've actually said that they are going to shoot for the moon and get better trade terms by the end of their 120-day term before they dissolve parliament and head to a general election. So a lot is riding, actually, on Thailand's side, but definitely the ceasefire now and finding peace on the border with their neighbour, Cambodia, in spite of all of the rhetoric and the escalating tensions, will be key, actually, and both sides might be pressed to actually come to a deal, or else they might face more trade tensions from the world's largest economy. Oh, dear. Okay, so the message is pretty clear from D.C., or from President Trump, that is, peace first and then we'll talk trade. Indeed.
