The European Commission has defended its sovereign right to regulate in reaction to Donald Trump's threat of retaliation against Big Tech laws.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new customs duties on countries that enforce European Union digital regulations, specifically the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), which he claims are discriminatory against American technology companies. This comes shortly after a trade agreement was reached between the European Commission and the White House, which included provisions to protect the EU's digital regulations in exchange for customs duties on exports to the US.

The European Commission responded by asserting its sovereign right to regulate economic activities within its territory and emphasized that its digital regulations apply to all companies, not just American ones. The Commission also highlighted shared objectives with the US, such as combating terrorism and protecting children online, while reaffirming the stability of the recent agreement.

Trump threatens EU digital rules

The European Union is once again in the U.S. President's sights. The trade agreement between the European Commission and the White House has barely been concluded. But Donald Trump is already threatening to impose new customs duties on countries that apply measures he considers discriminatory against American technology companies. The threat is a thinly-veiled attack on European regulations on digital services and digital markets known as the DSA and DMA. When questioned, the Commission responded with a clarification. I think it's useful to recall that what we've been saying a number of times that it is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory which are consistent with our democratic values. And to come to the second part of your question, this is also why this was not part of our agreement with the U.S. The latest statement by Trump, who is close to the heads of major American tech companies, is a slap in the face for the Commission. In defense of the agreement reached with Washington at the end of July, the European institution emphasized it had protected its digital regulations in exchange for 15% customs duties on exports to the U.S. The words of the U.S. President seem to question the Commission's predictability and stability of the agreement reached with Donald Trump. The institution reiterates that its regulation does not target American companies in particular and that it applies to all active companies in Europe. The Commission also adds that the two partners share common goals online, such as the fight against terrorism, the protection of children and the integrity of electoral campaigns.
