This comes as the District of Columbia has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the ongoing National Guard presence in Washington, D.C., which was initially justified as a response to a public safety emergency.

Local business owners in New Orleans, particularly in the French Quarter, have expressed strong opposition to the potential deployment, citing concerns that a military presence could deter patrons. While Trump cited crime as a reason for the possible action, city data indicates that crime rates in New Orleans are down across nearly all categories. The city, known as a 'blue dot' in a predominantly 'red' state, also faces pressure over its status as the only sanctuary city on the Gulf Coast. Louisiana's governor has expressed support for the potential deployment.

They've been there almost a month after President Trump declared it was a public safety emergency there, despite the latest crime statistics telling a different story. Meanwhile, President Trump suggested New Orleans could be the next city to receive National Guard troops. CBS News reporter Katie Weiss joins me now from the Big Easy. So what are you hearing there down in New Orleans? Well, good evening, John. Business owners here, especially in the French Quarter along Bourbon Street, are adamantly against this idea. One bar manager even telling me today, quote, it's a mistake. Now, after the terror attack here on New Year's Day on Bourbon Street, there was a big influx of military presence, armed police presence for big events like Super Bowl and Mardi Gras. A lot of party goers here at the time told me that they were happy to see that presence, that it made them feel more safe, but local businesses felt that it scared away patrons. And Katie, so far, going down the list of the places the president has talked about or has sent the National Guard, Los Angeles, he sent them there. He's threatened to send them to Baltimore and Chicago. Those are both blue territories, blue states. Louisiana is a red state, but New Orleans is more blue. Help us understand those politics. Well, New Orleans is known for being a blue dot in a sea of red. And President Trump said during an Oval Office meeting this week that it would only take two weeks to address what he calls a crime problem here in the Big Easy, that it would be, quote, easier than D.C. But really, city data shows that crime is actually down in New Orleans, that in fact, it's down across almost every single category. So I think one thing that some people are concerned about is the fact that New Orleans is also known for being the only sanctuary city on the Gulf Coast in terms of immigration. And as a matter of fact, New Orleans has really faced mounting pressure from both federal and state leaders to change that and to change that position as being a sanctuary city. In fact, Louisiana's governor says that he's welcoming the troops and wants to take action here.
