A delay for his trial that could provide a reprieve for Donald Trump's hopes to run for election next year. The judge overseeing the case against the former US president for mishandling classified documents has put the trial back till next May, which will fall right in the middle of the election campaign. Trump was indicted at a Florida court last month on multiple counts of withholding national defence information, concealing possession of classified documents and of making false statements to police. It was his second indictment this year after also being charged with paying hush money to an adult film star. He also said this week he was the target of a Department of Justice investigation into efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which Trump continues to baselessly claim he won. On the campaign trail in Iowa, he cried witch hunt. You know practically what a subpoena was in grand juries and all of this. Now I'm like becoming an expert. I have no choice because we have to. It's a disgrace. If you say something about an election, they want to put you in jail for the rest of your life. It's a disgrace. Trump's legal team has said the classified documents trial should be delayed till after next year's elections. He has not yet got his wish, but there remains a chance he might be able to argue for another delay when the trial comes around next May in the midst of the Republican primaries.
