The financial assistance, which includes currency swaps and additional peso purchases, aims to stabilize Argentina's economy following a significant currency collapse.

The meeting highlighted the close ideological alignment between the two leaders and focused on strengthening U.S.-Argentina economic relations. President Trump addressed concerns about the bailout amid a U.S. government shutdown and responded to questions about trade, particularly regarding soybean exports to China. Trump also discussed recent developments in Middle East peace negotiations, emphasizing the importance of disarmament by Hamas.

And we start in Washington, where President Trump is back at the White House following his whirlwind trip to the Middle East. And today he is meeting with the president of Argentina, Javier Mele. That meeting comes just days after the U.S. agreed to pay a $20 billion bailout for the Argentinian economy. To talk more about this, let's bring in CBS News White House reporter Olivia Rinaldi. Olivia, thanks for being with us here. This financial rescue is facing some criticism, especially since, as you know, the U.S. government is in the middle of a shutdown. What is the justification here, and how does this benefit the United States? Nancy, it's good to be with you. President Trump and President Mele of Argentina just held a bilateral meeting here at the White House, which was all about strengthening the relationship between the two leaders and the two countries, the U.S. and Argentina. President Trump was asked what makes that package that they sent to Argentina America first. It was $20 billion that were given to them in currency swaps and an additional amount of pesos that were bought to really bolster the Argentinian economy after their currency really collapsed following elections over the summer. President Trump said that it's meant to help a great philosophy in a great country. We should note that ideologically, President Trump and President Mele of Argentina are very closely related. Mele is often referred to as the MAGA leader in South America. He's kind of got a very similar philosophy and outlook compared to President Trump. President Trump also said that the support of Argentina and their economy really hinges on the success of Mele, especially in their upcoming midterm elections that are expected to happen at the end of October, so really showing you how important the relationship of the two leaders is in regards to the economic ties between the U.S. and Argentina. I also do want to note there was questions about those soybean purchases that you and I had spoken about previously. There is an issue right now happening with soybean farmers in the U.S. where China is not buying their soybeans, but they are buying them from Argentina, a country where we just bailed out their economy. President Trump said that he doesn't think it makes a big difference or that he said he guesses China is trying to draw a wedge between the U.S. and Argentina by buying those soybeans, but he said it's not going to mean anything because the two countries are so close, so a lot covered here today specifically on trade between the two countries and strengthening those economic ties. Yeah, and, Olivia, as part of that press availability, the president also there discussing the next steps in this peace deal in the Middle East. Can you talk about what he said there about Hamas' future? Yeah, quite a bit of news the president made on that. Of course, he just got back from the Middle East early this morning where he was asked about that deal with Hamas, whether they plan to uphold it. Will they disarm, which is part of phase two of that peace agreement? Take a listen to what President Trump just said about how he would deal with Hamas if they don't agree to disarming. And if they don't disarm, we will disarm them and it'll happen quickly and perhaps violently. But they will disarm. Do you understand me? Yes. Because everyone says, oh, well, they won't disarm. They will disarm. And I spoke to Hamas and I said, you're going to disarm, right? Yes, sir. We're going to disarm. That's what they told me. They will disarm or we will disarm them. Now the president said there that he spoke to Hamas. He later clarified that his people spoke to Hamas. That is, of course, the negotiations that have been happening directly with the Hamas negotiators. And I think that the reason why this deal was actually able to have such a breakthrough in the last couple of weeks is those direct negotiations. But President Trump said he is not playing when it comes to disarmament and if that they don't disarm, this could get very violent. Nancy. All right.
