Europe's confrontation with Donald Trump over Greenland is fast becoming more than another quarrel. The European Union faces a stress test of whether it can respond as a united force when its sovereignty is challenged. Bloomberg's Jill Disis has the latest.

During the Davos summit in Switzerland, President Trump intensified efforts to gain control over Greenland, using new tariffs as leverage in negotiations with European leaders. The move has unsettled decades of international policy and raised concerns among U.S. allies, particularly in Europe, about the implications for territorial sovereignty and trade relations.

Trump's approach, characterized by assertive demands and increased tariffs, has prompted discussions about possible European retaliation if the U.S. proceeds with additional tariffs. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Europe over trade agreements and geopolitical influence.

Without collective governance, cooperation gives way to relentless competition. Competition from the United States of America, through trade agreements that undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions, and openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe, combined with an endless accumulation of new tariffs that are fundamentally unacceptable, even more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty. I doubt it. Look, they need that agreement very badly with us. They really do. They fought very hard to get it, so I doubt that. But we'll see what happens. We have a lot of meetings scheduled on Greenland. President Trump there says that he is confident that the EU will stick by their trade deal, even as he imposes, of course, new tariffs in his quest to take control of Greenland, as France, of course, in the sunglasses at that, too, blasting his tracks. We could do that. We could do that now. He said he said the president. But yeah, yeah, cool. We could talk about it. We're running out of time. OK, let's bring it up. Let's let's bring in her team to talk us through the highlights of Davos. So far, as we make our way to another day there, of course, Gilles is with us here. Our news desk managing editor. OK, what's the doubt to you apart from the the Sunnies? I mean, I think at this point, David, it's just really extraordinary to watch how unsettling this entire week has, you know, really kicked off here. I mean, you've got Donald Trump continuing. I mean, it's not really a surprise after all, but continuing to offend, you know, decades of international policy here, obviously has really kind of, you know, created this this incredible environment of concern among, you know, the U.S.'s European allies here over Greenland in particular. I think what's really interesting to watch is, you know, sort of the difference between Trump, who's obviously I mean, this is very classic. Trump just kind of going in all bluster, trying to make demands. And I have to mention this. They've taken over this 19th century church in Davos. Yes. With this big banner, as we're showing right now, House of God. I think it's just kind of very symbolic of, I guess, the power play. Yeah, they're trying to bring to Davos. Exactly. And I mean, look, Trump, like honestly, has like tons of reasons to be emboldened, right? Like a lot of his, you know, tariff policies last year, like kind of works. He got, you know, almost every, you know, U.S. ally to kind of come to the table and negotiate over, you know, creating these like, you know, fairly, you know, substantially higher tariffs than existed prior to last year. You know, he had, you know, this this at this point, seemingly successful operation in Venezuela to remove Nicolas Maduro from power. And he's also, you know, staring down at Europe at this point that has a lot of vulnerabilities over Ukraine. You know, some of their issues. It's not entirely clear that all the European leaders ultimately agree with each other can come to some kind of a consensus on how exactly they retaliate against Trump. That's, you know, really the question here is if he goes ahead with these February 1 tariffs, trying to push everybody to the table over Greenland negotiations. You know, there's a possibility that Europe could come in, you know, on February 7th with some retaliatory efforts. But Trump appears to be calling their bluff.
