Former President Donald Trump has announced that U.S. Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio will be his running mate. Trump's selection of Vance as the vice presidential candidate was unveiled at the start of the Republican National Convention.

J.D. Vance, a relative newcomer to politics, was first elected as Ohio's junior senator in 2022. He grew up in Ohio, served in the Marines, and later attended Yale Law School, where he met his future wife. The couple has three children. Before entering politics, Vance worked at a corporate law firm and then moved to San Francisco to become a venture capitalist.

Vance is best known for his bestselling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which was adapted into a Netflix movie. Initially, Vance was a vocal critic of Trump, but after Trump's election in 2016, he reversed his stance and eventually apologized for his earlier comments. By 2022, Trump was actively campaigning for Vance.

Vance's political positions include opposition to abortion and aid to Ukraine, downplaying the climate crisis, and supporting Trump's false claims about the 2020 election. Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., has expressed support for Vance, stating he favored him for the vice presidential spot. Trump believes Vance is the most suitable candidate to assume the vice presidency, describing him as a staunch conservative ally and Trump convert.

Senator Vance is against abortion and aid to Ukraine. He downplays the climate crisis and has repeated Trump falsehoods about the 2020 election. The former president's son, Donald Trump Jr., has said he favored Vance all along. If you get that call, what's the answer? So certainly if you ask me, I want to help him. Now he will.
