President Donald Trump says the people of Venezuela are now free of Maduro's dictatorship. But Venezuela's vice president has demanded the US send Maduro back, calling him the rightful president.

The U.S has launched strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities in a campaign against the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was apprehended by U.S. forces and brought to New York State, where he and his wife, Celia Flores, face narco-terrorism charges. President Donald Trump justified the operation as necessary to stop alleged drug trafficking and announced that U.S. officials would temporarily govern Venezuela, promising fair management and support for the Venezuelan people.

The operation, named Operation Absolute Resolve, had reportedly been planned for months, despite previous assurances to Congress that regime change was not the goal. Lawmakers are now seeking clarity on the U.S. exit strategy, as Trump has not ruled out deploying American troops in Venezuela. Maduro has denied the charges and is expected to appear in a New York federal court.

This extremely successful operation should serve as warning to anyone who would threaten American sovereignty or endanger American lives. But Trump's warning came with a stunning announcement that U.S. officials would temporarily be running Venezuela's government. We're going to run the country right. It's going to run very judiciously, very fairly. It's going to make a lot of money. We're going to give money to the people. Trump says Operation Absolute Resolve had been planned for months. Even though Trump officials had assured members of Congress the U.S. was not seeking regime change. Now lawmakers are demanding Trump brief Congress on what America's exit strategy looks like and when, given the president says he's not ruling out U.S. soldiers on the ground in Venezuela. It's a move that could provoke division in the United States. I am tired of my country going into other sovereign countries and destroying things. It is time for the United States to stop this imperialist agenda. Everybody's just happy because everybody has been waiting for democracy and change in Venezuela. And good things are going to happen now for these people. Nicolas Maduro has denied the charges against him. He and his wife are expected to appear in a New York federal court on charges of narco-terrorism as early as Monday. If convicted, they could face years in prison.
