The administration has also objected to exhibits that discuss Benjamin Franklin's history as a slave owner. The executive director of the American Historical Association emphasized the importance of presenting the full complexity of historical figures and events, noting that museums have traditionally reflected narratives shaped by government priorities.

And it's published a list of exhibits, it says, are objectionable, many of them on display at the American History Museum behind me. So we sat down with the executive director of the American Historical Association to see what that list tells us about how the Trump administration is thinking. There's a lot of focus on immigration. This painting or this exhibit from the American History Museum of the Statue of Liberty holding tomatoes in her right hand instead of a torch, they're also very angry about exhibits about the diversity of Latinos with disabilities. Can you see why? Well, you know, I think that this particular Statue of Liberty, they're viewing as a front to the icon of the Statue of Liberty itself. But if you look at the context and you look at how this object is presented in the museum, you'll find that this is a historical object that tells an American story. It's a story about a farm worker march in Florida in the early 21st century. And it is an example of a long history of Americans using the Statue of Liberty to make claims about freedom and their rights. And talking of icons, they're very angry that the American History Museum emphasizes Ben Franklin owned slaves. Is that appropriate for the American narrative? Yes, it is. We have to acknowledge all of the aspects of our history. The people who lived in the past as people today are extraordinarily complex figures. Talking about the fact that Benjamin Franklin owned several slaves during his lifetime does not diminish the fact that he was also an incredibly brilliant inventor and one of our founding fathers. So we have to just really grapple with all the complexity of people. It's simply historical facts. There is the argument that institutions like the Smithsonian, so reliant on government funding, have always reflected officially mandated narratives. It just so happens, though, it was decided it was beneficial to present the U.S. as diverse over the last few decades. However, clearly that's too much for Donald Trump.
