Okay, the Department of Homeland Security has officially launched an immigration enforcement operation in the city of New Orleans today. It's dubbed Operation Catahoula Crunch. I mean, that's the actual name that they came up with, Catahoula Crunch. DHS says it is targeting, quote, criminal illegal aliens. CBS News reporter Katie Weiss has more from NOLA. Well, I saw a few federal agents throughout the city's popular tourist district called the French Quarter and along Canal Street, which is normally a very bustling tourist street with lots of shops and restaurants. The federal agents appeared to be kind of getting into position. They didn't appear to be making any arrests, at least from what I could tell. I did see a bit of a police presence, but so far we've not been able to get confirmed from Customs and Border Patrol any further details about their operation. We do know that about 250 federal agents are expected here across the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast over this week, and with the goal of arresting 5,000 immigrants. Now, one thing that I found interesting as well was that the city here seemed quite subdued on Tuesday. Jackson Square, which is normally a popular tourist area with lots of street vendors selling their artwork and things of that nature, those folks were not there. It appeared to be a bit of a ghost town. Many people have been shutting down their businesses to protect their workers. Don't stand up like that! In fact, Monday night there was a protest with many people here in New Orleans voicing their opposition to the federal agents arriving. Take a listen. We don't support ICE coming in, coming to our campuses, coming to our community, coming to our cities, and saying, and taking our neighbors, our friends, our classmates off the street. And at least one local activist group tells me that they plan to hold virtual meetings every night to teach people about their rights if in case they do come across these federal agents. They say that they're gonna be holding these meetings virtually to try to protect people and keep them from having to leave their homes. We'll send it back to you.
