Tropical Storm Erin is now expected to become a major hurricane and could reach the U.S. CBS News' Rob Marciano reports on the developments and path of the storm.

Tropical storm Erin is projected to intensify into a major hurricane, potentially reaching category three status north of Puerto Rico. While most forecast models currently indicate the storm will curve away from the United States, its exact path remains uncertain. The storm is already contributing to dangerous rip currents along the northeastern U.S. coastline.

In addition to the tropical threat, flash flooding has affected areas in Georgia and Tennessee, prompting water rescues and evacuations. Extreme heat continues to impact the western and central United States, with warnings in effect for multiple regions and temperatures expected to remain above average.

We're going to begin, though, with something that's not so great. Some very scary weather in the east, including tropical storm Aaron, now expected to become a major hurricane that could reach the United States. There are also deadly rip currents along beaches in the northeast, including a very desperate situation in New Jersey. We'll have more on that in just a second. We also saw flash flooding yesterday in Georgia and Tennessee, forcing water rescues and evacuations. Some drivers, as you see, had to abandon their cars in three feet of water. This was near Chattanooga, Tennessee. CBS News Rob Marciano is tracking all of it for us to bring us up to date. Rob, good morning. What have you got? Well, we've got thunderstorms. They're just sitting one place. We've seen this all summer long, haven't we, Gail? And Chattanooga got it yesterday. And guess what? They may very well get it again today. So there's a flood watch that's up for much of eastern Kentucky, including Nashville, including Knoxville. You see how these storms kind of bubble up, could dump two, three inches of additional rainfall. And if it happens in the same place, then we'll see more in the way of flash flooding. All right. Let's talk about tropical storm Aaron. The good news is hasn't really developed much in the last 24 hours. It's been very slow to get itself going. It's got dry air. It's got some cooler temperature at the water to deal with. But over the next two days, probably by Friday, we'll look for it to be our first hurricane of the Atlantic season. And then as we head towards Saturday and Sunday to category three status. So that's a that's a major hurricane north of Puerto Rico by then. What happens after that? Everybody wants to see these lines are spaghetti models. Most of them still curve them away from the US. We can see there's a couple of tickets to take it this way. So it's still way too far out there to determine whether or not it's going to impact us for sure. It will bring more in the way of waves and rip currents to the eastern shoreline. Still hot out west, extreme heat across parts of Phoenix. Again, warnings are up and temperatures will be well above average across the Intermountain West today into the 90s and up and over 100 degrees in many spots like Las Vegas, Medford, you're near it as well. And this does spread towards us. Everybody's getting into this. It spreads to the eastern or the central part of the U.S. Kansas City year into the 90s. Chicago, after another bout of heavy rain last night, you're into the 90s as well. And this does also get to the east. Actually, it's here already hot and humid conditions across the northeast today. So once again, a lot of people will be heading to the beaches today to cool off. Nate. All right. Got it, Rob.
