Approximately 800 National Guard troops have been deployed to Washington, D.C. by President Trump to assist with security, crowd control, and logistical support for local law enforcement. The president has taken direct control of the district's police department for a period of 30 days, a move permitted by the unique status of D.C., which does not have a governor.

The National Guard members are authorized to make arrests, though their primary role is to support law enforcement rather than lead operations. Not all guardsmen will be armed at all times, and only a portion will be actively assisting police at any given moment. The duration of the deployment will be determined by the president, and additional units from other states may be called in if required.

Closer to home, National Guard troops are walking the streets of Washington, D.C., this morning. President Trump deployed approximately 800 guardsmen to help carry out his plan to take control of the district's police department for the next 30 days. CBS News Pentagon reporter Eleanor Watson is live from the Pentagon this morning. Ellie, so let's break down for our viewers what the National Guard and federal law enforcement can do in D.C. and what can't they do. I'll start with the National Guard. The National Guard in D.C. is unique because the president, since there is no governor, has the authority to activate them when he sees fit, as he did this week. About 800 members of the D.C. Guard have been called up in a status that does allow them to make arrests. But defense officials tell us that right now their mission in D.C. is to support law enforcement with tasks like security, crowd control and certain logistics. While they will have access to their standard-issued weapons, they're not all expected to be armed all the time. About 100 to 200 of the overall 800, according to the Army, will be at any given time assisting local law enforcement. So right now the role of the Guard, the D.C. Guard, in this mission is really an additional show of force on top of all of the other measures the president announced this week in his crackdown on the Capitol. So what is the impact on federal resources while this is all happening, Ellie? Vlad, the unanswered question is still, how long is this mission supposed to last? There are certain restrictions on how long the federal government can control the police department, but there are really no restrictions on how long the D.C. Guard can be activated. There are only about 2,400 members of the D.C. National Guard, and already 800 are expected to participate in this mission. U.S. Secretary Pete Hegseth has said that other units from other states, other specialized units are prepared to come to D.C. if needed, and the duration of how long troops will be in the Capitol will be determined by the president. This mission in D.C. really is the latest example of the president, in his second term, using the military inside the country for missions that have historically been the responsibility of domestic law enforcement.
