The UN Human Rights Office on Monday condemned the killing of the six, saying the actions by Israel's military represented a grave breach of international humanitarian law. Israel's military said it targeted and killed al-Sharif, saying he headed a Hamas militant cell and was involved in rocket attacks on Israel. Al-Jazeera rejected that assertion. Al-Sharif had also rejected earlier claims by Israel that he was connected to Hamas. And special rapporteur Irene Kahn said last month that Israel's claims against al-Sharif were unsubstantiated. Al-Jazeera said the attack was a desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza, calling him one of Gaza's bravest journalists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday he expected to complete a new expanded offensive in the enclave fairly quickly, just hours later and only minutes before his death, as Sharif posted on X that Israel had been intensely bombarding Gaza City for more than two hours. Palestinians reported the heaviest bombardments in weeks on Monday in areas east of Gaza City. At the funeral, an outpouring of grief from others covering the war in Gaza, which is the deadliest on record for journalists, according to the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Palestinian journalist Mohamed Al-Sikli says Israel was trying to silence the word by killing journalists and to, quote, conceal its crimes in the Gaza Strip. In the midst of the news, another Palestinian journalist, Mohamed Qissa, says, you're always thinking will we survive or not, but I'm documenting a crime by the occupation that must reach the world. Al-Sharif was previously part of a Reuters team that won a 2024 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Gaza conflict. The Committee to Protect Journalists says at least 186 journalists have been killed in the war, while the Hamas-run Gaza government's media office puts that toll at 238. Al-Jazeera said Sharif had left a social media message to be posted in the event of his death. It read, I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent.
