President Donald Trump has placed the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and announced he's activating the National Guard to combat crime in Washington, D.C.

President Trump has announced that Washington, D.C. and its police department will be placed under federal control, invoking a provision of the D.C. Home Rule Act. This action allows the president to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department for up to 30 days during emergencies. 

Alongside this measure, approximately 800 National Guard members will be deployed to the city to assist with crime-fighting efforts. The president stated that these steps are intended to address crime in the capital and emphasized the symbolic importance of maintaining order in Washington, D.C., as representative of the nation as a whole.

This announcement comes amid heightened federal law enforcement in D.C. Scripps News White House producer and reporter Jacob Garden-Schwartz live for us now about this. And Jacob, you were there. What did we learn in this news conference? Yeah, good afternoon. Well, as you mentioned, the president announcing a plan to, in his words, quote, liberate Washington, D.C. from crime. Specifically, the president says he has invoked a specific provision within the D.C. Home Rule Act. That's a D.C. law that governs how the leadership system operates here in D.C., the mayor, the city council, those sorts of things. But that law does give the president the ability to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department, our local police department here, for a period of up to 30 days during times that there is a, quote, special conditions of emergency nature. The president sending a notification to the mayor, as well as to the relevant members of Congress, as required by that law. As you noted, the president also announcing he is sending upwards of about 800 National Guard members here to D.C. They will assist in crime fighting efforts alongside a number of other federal law enforcement agencies and offices who are already on the ground, folks from the FBI, DEA, ATF, DHS, and others. The president says that these measures are intended to, quote, clean up the streets of D.C. He pointed to specific instances of crime, but also spoke about the symbolism of the city, our nation's capital, and what he sees as the crime problem here being broadly representative of what's happening throughout the country. Here's a little bit of his remarks on that topic. My father always used to tell me, I had a wonderful father, very smart, and he used to say, son, when you walk into a restaurant and you see a dirty front door, don't go in. Because if the front door is dirty, the kitchen's dirty also. Same thing with the Capitol. If our Capitol's dirty, our whole country is dirty.
