A Dallas woman was left paralysed after a large tree belonging to a tree foundation chairman fell on her car.

A Dallas woman, identified as 32-year-old Macy Evans, was left paralyzed after a tree fell onto her SUV while she was driving in the Lakewood neighborhood. The accident resulted in a severe spinal cord injury, and Evans is currently in the neuro ICU. The tree, a chinkapin oak, was found to be hollow at the base and showed signs of internal decay. The homeowner, Dan Patterson, who is also a prominent figure in tree conservation, stated that the tree was regularly maintained and suggested that heavy rainfall and increased nut production may have contributed to the tree's fall. 

Certified arborists commented that while regular inspections can reduce the risk of such incidents, they cannot be completely prevented. A fundraiser has been set up to support Evans and her family as they prepare for long-term rehabilitation and care needs.

She was driving in the Lakewood neighborhood Monday afternoon when the accident happened and today we contacted the owner of the property where that tree fell. Fox 4's Lori Brown live in Dallas with this story. Lori. Heather when I talked to the homeowner this morning he asked me what I knew about the driver's injuries. When I told him the severity he said he had no idea and that he feels terrible. She didn't act in pain but you know she had to be. Dan Flick was one of the first to pull up to this scene of a huge tree crushing a Porsche SUV. And then they were noticed there were electrical wires sparking and we moved over to right here and about that time the transformer up there or whatever the connector is exploded and it went everywhere flames and shrapnel out into the street. The driver 32 year old Macy Evans according to a GoFundMe set up for her medical expenses she sustained a severe spinal cord injury and is now in the neuro ICU. Macy is the devoted mother of a six-month-old baby girl and this accident has not only turned her world upside down but also created an unimaginable challenge for her family. The road ahead will be long and uncertain. Wednesday the cut up chica pen oak remained on the sidewalk outside the home where it fell on Wendover Road and Sperry Street in Lakewood. It is now easy to see that the base of the tree was hollow and some branches also showed decay on the inside. The owner of the home Dan Patterson returned my phone message. He asked if I knew anything about injuries. After I told him the driver was paralyzed from the neck down he said he felt terrible and that he was not aware of that. Patterson has a lot of trees on his property and that's no coincidence. He is the chairman of the Texas Trees Foundation and past chairman of the National Tree Trust in DC and National Arbor Day Foundation in Nebraska. He said he has a ground crew that maintains his trees regularly. From my perspective he told me these things happen. I don't know there is any way to avoid random acts like this. The tree was in no way compromised. As a tree guy I can tell you what I believe happened. When you have a lot of rain in the spring and you have an oak tree or pecan tree or any tree with nuts it grows a lot of nuts and they swell up and it adds a lot of weight to the upper regions of the tree. That probably was the culprit that caused the problem. We reached out to certified arborist Steve Hauser about what if anything people can do to prevent something like this. If your trees are medium to large in size 15-20 inches and larger we like to be out at least on an annual basis. Hauser says while you can reduce the potential for sudden failure you can't eliminate it. I wish we could say that we can prevent this ever happening again. Flick hopes the community will come out to support Macy. She's gonna need help for the rest of her life with that baby and her husband. The online fundraiser organized by Macy's family and friends say that they are preparing for mobility equipment, rehabilitation and also stability for her baby.
