We are now officially past the peak of hurricane season in the tropics. Watch this video to learn more about what are we seeing right now, and why a quiet peak does not equate to a quiet forecast.

Meteorologists report that the Atlantic remains relatively quiet just after the official peak of hurricane season, with only a low chance of tropical development identified off the coast of Africa. The subdued activity is attributed to persistent pockets of dry air and wind shear, both of which inhibit storm formation.

Despite the current calm, experts warn that the hurricane season is only halfway through, and history shows that significant storms can still develop in the coming weeks. Past years, such as 2020, saw a surge in storm activity after the peak, prompting meteorologists to advise continued vigilance for potential tropical threats.

Tracking the tropics: It’s (relatively) quiet out there

Hello and welcome alongside digital meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser. My name is Mark Willard and Caitlin we are now one day past the peak of hurricane season, September 10th, today being September 11th. And for a peak you know it doesn't look like much is going on right now. Can you get us up to speed on what's happening in the Atlantic right now? Yeah so it has been really quiet for right around the peak time yesterday morning on the peak day. Actually we had a blank map in terms of areas to watch. So today now we have this little yellow blob hanging out off the coast of Africa so it's just a low chance of development. But besides that we're not really watching anything else in terms of the tropics on the Atlantic side of things. So the kind of reason behind this is we have some pockets of dry air still in the Atlantic. So dry air suppresses tropical development because tropics you know they thrive on moisture that's kind of what builds them up. So when they're hitting these dry pockets like here in these red and orange colors and that just chokes the storms. We also are dealing with pockets of wind shear. So you can see the reds and the pinks are those areas of higher wind shear. When I play this out for the next few days you can still see you know there's some decent sized pockets of those. So that's kind of what's keeping the tropics from popping off right now. Man who knew wind shear and dry air I mean the hurricane's worst enemy. Who knew? Okay so no really direct threat to us right now but you know people really shouldn't put their guard down so to speak. As we know history does tend to repeat itself and actually five years ago back in 2020 during COVID when everyone was watching Tiger King and wearing masks inside and all of that. Actually hurricane season started popping off after September 10th. Pretty bizarre thing. Can you tell us what happened then? Yeah so as you can see on this graph right here you know we still have another half of the season to go. You know we're at the peak but there's still a lot ahead. In 2020 we actually ran out of names shortly after the date that we're on right now. We had to go into those great names which we now have a supplemental list in case that ever happens again. So just because the first half is quiet or even if it's not quiet that can still mean a lot is in store for the second half. So we're keeping our guards up here at weather.com. Yeah absolutely and as we know last year we saw hurricane Helene and Milton come after September 10th as well. So you know let's let's keep our guard up as you say.
