Well, it is time to get to work and explore your potential. Jennifer Cushel, who runs a career readiness program, joins me this morning with tips to help any of us take control of our future. Good morning. Thank you for being with us. Good morning, Dionne. Well, you have some career hunting tips that could help anyone identify their talents and goals and help market themselves for a great job. Is that right? Absolutely. Well, I'm excited to be with you in Dallas. We work with a lot of schools in your neighborhood, Texas Christian, Texas Women, UNT, A&M. And what we do is we're trying to help young people understand and also adults understand that the market is evolving rapidly. And we all have to be thinking about ourselves as talent in that market. So we have the navigation skills we need to succeed. Well, there are a number of places and many say non-traditional places to look for work. Online, of course, now is where you can find a wealth of opportunities. Tell me more about that. Yeah. And that's a great point. There are so many ways to find opportunity. But what we really try to advocate is start with yourself. Start with who you are, what you're interested in, what you're looking for, and figure out how to package that successfully. Employers are looking for skills. They're looking for hard skills, for soft skills. And it's critical that we take the time to package ourselves, understand what value we're bringing into that market before we start putting things out there. Wow. That is so poignant. And also, entrepreneurs are always looking for help, I understand. And so that's something to think about as well. Absolutely. And actually, most people that we talk to, 65% of our students, say they want to be entrepreneurs themselves. So they're not even looking for jobs. But entrepreneurship is always kind of, you know, underrepresented, I would say. Entrepreneurs always need talent. So if you're looking for a job, there are entrepreneurs everywhere in your community that are looking for help. If you're interested in entrepreneurship yourself, there's so many different ways to get into it. As a contractor, as a small business, as a micropreneur. You can provide consulting services. So we can create jobs, and we can also support the entrepreneurs in our communities. Wow. So tap in, market yourself. And also, should we have a quick pitch ready? Oh, yes, please. Absolutely. When someone asks you, even at Starbucks or at the gas station, what you do, tell them what you do. I was on a plane the other day, and I was talking to someone for half an hour. It turned out they were a venture capitalist. And I'm a small business, you know, going for venture. So we never know who we're talking to. It's critical that you're able to express who you are and what you're looking to do, and what your aspirations are. Bring some energy into the conversation, too. And inside our own circle, our circle of family and friends, I understand that some opportunities come from just having conversations that you might not ordinarily. I would say most opportunities come that way. We think, we've been trained to say we have to put our information onto a resume and throw it out into an applicant tracking system that no one looks at. The way that people find jobs and find opportunities is by talking to other human beings. And I think sometimes we get shy, or we get a little, you know, isolated, and we don't realize there are people all around us who are connected to companies and organizations that we might be interested in. Wow. And what if you just really are having a hard time trying to figure out what your niche is? Should we just look at what we're good at and our skills and go from there? Well, we have a whole process to take people through this, but I think yes. Think about the things that light you up. I can tell by talking to someone in five minutes what they love. And I think if you talk to the people right around you who know you best, what you want to do is elevate those skills, elevate those interests, and start to piece it together like a puzzle. So you can find opportunity not just for work, but for good jobs and good careers. Wow. Thank you so much for being with us with such valuable information.
