Police are investigating their own actions in the lead up to a devastating crash in Penrith that has left one man in a critical condition. The ordeal began when police started to pursue a stolen red Mazda near Lithgow.

A 90-kilometre police pursuit in the Penrith area concluded with a multi-vehicle crash, resulting in significant injuries. The chase began when police first spotted a stolen car near Lithgow and attempted to intercept it after it rammed a police vehicle and drove at an officer. Pursuits were initiated and terminated for safety reasons, with road spikes eventually deployed to stop the vehicle. The driver crashed into three cars, was ejected from the vehicle, and sustained a fractured neck. Two other people were also injured and taken to hospital. Authorities confirmed the driver was disqualified, driving a stolen car, and had outstanding arrest warrants related to domestic violence. A critical investigation into the incident will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Three hospitalised after police pursuit and multi-car crash

90 kilometre on and off police chase ending in destruction. Obviously a tragic scene. Police first spotted the car in Bowen Fowls near Lithgow around 5am, then at 7am the vehicle was sighted again on Wearaway Street in South Lyttelton before it allegedly rammed a police car and drove at an officer. A pursuit commenced as the car sped along Bowes Line of Road, later being terminated due to safety concerns. The driver continued to drive erratically with another short pursuit taking place before Polar and Highway Patrol took over. Road spikes were successfully deployed in two different locations with the driver then crashing into three cars just before Cranbrook Road. At the time of the collision, the offending driver of the red Mazda was ejected from the vehicle. Four paramedic crews and care flight rushed to the scene around 9am, taking the 33-year-old man to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. He has a confirmed fractured neck. Another 35-year-old man was taken to the same hospital with minor hand injuries, while a woman was taken to Nepean Hospital with back injuries. The three-vehicle crash at peak hour has seen Castle Ray Road closed for most of the morning. Commuters have been forced to take diversions from Cranbrook Road, while the cars sit here in limbo. Subsequent checks have already found alarming details about the offender. This person is the person driving the stolen vehicle. This person is the person with a disqualified licence. This person is the person that has outstanding arrest warrants relating to domestic violence offences.
