An 81-year-old woman is among three people charged for allegedly running an assisted dying operation from the Gold Coast, selling whale euthanasia medication to vulnerable people.

Police allege the group obtained a lethal drug under the guise of a fake charity claiming to euthanise whales, then sold the drug to individuals seeking assistance with end-of-life options.

Elaine Archerow, who described herself as the group's secretary, is accused of attending seminars and transporting the drug with the intent to sell. Police are searching for relatives of up to 20 people who may have been affected by the group's activities. Archerow has been released from custody, while her co-accused, Brett Taylor, remains in custody pending a court appearance.

Police claim Miss Archerow described herself as the secretary, attending seminars and holding meetings, allegedly travelling recently to a symposium on the Sunshine Coast with four bottles of the deadly drug with the intention of selling them. She certainly wasn't expecting to wind up in custody for any of this type of activity, that's for sure. Today, the court heard of a recent phone conversation between the 81-year-old and her co-accused, 53-year-old Brett Taylor, where she allegedly said, I have always tried to give people access to a safe end-of-life drug that will work. I'm very confident that the aiding in suicide matter will be... It'll struggle to make its way into a trial, in my view. The other drugs matters might, but I don't think that one... I don't think there's enough in that one. Police are still searching for the relatives of up to 20 people across Australia who may have fallen victim to End of Life Services.
