largest Jewish community outside of Israel, and local politicians have been expressing solidarity. The city has also seen tense demonstrations supporting the Palestinian cause in recent days. And on the other side of the country, Los Angeles area rabbis and Jewish organizations held a stand with Israel rally. Our correspondent Waseem Kornei was there. As Israel mourns the loss of more than 1,000 of its own, the atmosphere here has been a surprisingly joyous and festive. You hear cars honking their horns, we've seen people dancing, chanting, singing, saying long live Israel both in English and in Hebrew. We've also seen people carrying a number of posters, some of which have some very aggressive messaging. One of them saying that if you support Hamas you are an anti-Semite. Another one saying that the cancer is Iran. We also heard from a number of people for belonging to the Jewish and Israeli community here. Speaking to the crowd, one of them saying that it was Israel who wants peace and not the Palestinians. And perhaps less surprisingly, there was not one word for the victims of Israeli air raids in Gaza. But this has been an incredible show of force by the Jewish and Israeli community. There are more than half a million Jewish people who live in the greater Los Angeles area. Many of them often travel to Israel, many of them have friends and families who live there. Proof once again that the ties between the United States and Israel are very strong.

The US government shutdown is now in its 36th day—a record-breaking length. While both political parties blame each other, the result is being felt by the public. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are going without pay, and government programs like food benefits have been slashed.
