For over four decades, Pakistan sheltered Afghans fleeing war. But since 2023, authorities have often branded them "terrorists and criminals" and begun mass deportations. Rights groups warn women, journalists and activists are especially at risk.

Thousands of Afghan refugees are being compelled to leave Pakistan, where many have lived for decades, due to a crackdown by the Pakistani government. Afghan families report harassment by authorities and say they have no choice but to return, often selling their possessions at a loss to afford the journey.

Upon arrival in Afghanistan, returnees face screening by Taliban officials and are often left with little money or resources. Women and those with connections to the former government face particular dangers, including loss of rights, restricted access to education, and threats to their safety. Aid organisations report that many families live in overcrowded camps with limited access to basic necessities.

These trucks have been waiting for hours to cross the border from Pakistan to Afghanistan. Sometimes it can even take days. Inside, Afghan families have loaded everything they own. After finding refuge in Pakistan for decades, they are now being shunned away. Islamabad is cracking down on Afghan refugees, branding many as terrorists and criminals. This group of Afghan men say they have no choice but to leave. I was born and lived in Taksila, Pakistan. Every day authorities came and harassed us. They even took women from our neighbourhoods and deported them. That's what made us decide to leave Pakistan voluntarily. For women, returning to Afghanistan is especially dangerous. The UN reports cases of torture, arbitrary detention and persecution of women by the Taliban simply because of their gender. Women in Afghanistan have no freedom of movement, no job prospects and no access to education. My younger sister just passed her high school exams. Another child in our family was studying the Koran. Many of them have been cut off from their studies. Female education is banned in Afghanistan. Their lives are destroyed. For the arriving returnees, there's another queue waiting. This time, they'll be screened by Taliban officials. A UN report says those with ties to the former government, journalists or activists often face harassment, even death threats, despite the Taliban's claims that they'll receive amnesty. Most of these refugees return to Afghanistan with little to no money. They forced us out and we had to sell our sheep, goats and cows at very low prices. Renting these trucks cost us everything we had. We have suffered heavy losses. Many of them will end up here in the Omari camp, one of the biggest near the border. Taliban officials insist that returnees are well cared for. The camp hosts over 1,000 families. We provide cooked food and other necessities for all of them. But aid organisations say families live in overcrowded tents, with little food, water or medical care. Upon returning, many Afghans have gone into hiding to stay safe. And for women, the return to Afghanistan means losing their rights and the chance to shape their own future.

On the same day a ground offensive was launched in Gaza City, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry report concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, a finding emphatically denied by Israeli officials.
