This is home for tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians. The tent city sprawling across the desert in Rafah, southern Gaza, is the latest temporary shelter for families who have been displaced again and again since the beginning of Israel's war. This family left their home in Shuja'iyah all the way in the north. They moved to al-Nusayrat in central Gaza, but that was bombed too. So they decided to go to Khan Yunus, where Israel said Palestinians would be safe. Now Khan Yunus is the focus of heavy airstrikes. So Nour and 50 members of her extended family ended up here in this desolate area of Rafah. We have nothing here except for this nylon that we use to cover ourselves. No food, no water, no toilets, no furniture. At least at the school we used to get aid. Here there is nothing. They're traumatized and terrified of more Israeli attacks. They're grappling with a tough reality. Amal Momineen is originally from Ashati. Born in a refugee camp, she never imagined her life there would be shattered and that she would end up fleeing for the sake of her family's safety, but not knowing where to go. They sought refuge in al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, but it was a short stay. The hospital was bombarded and it became dangerous with shrapnel flying over our heads. We left in a hurry without even taking anything of our belongings. It was so scary. We had to go on a road controlled by the Israelis. Rafah's Hamad Hospital is where many displaced families are converging. But as their numbers increase, the conditions become worse. Our life is a tragedy. There are no toilets. We try to come up with solutions so we can survive. We walk a kilometer hoping to get water, which is often salty and undrinkable. Words cannot sum up our suffering. And there's no end in sight to the war. Israel says it will continue its bombardment until Hamas is defeated. And in the middle of the attacks, the 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza are battling hunger, disease and cold. Many have lost everything, friends, loved ones, homes, belongings.
