Heavy rains led to flash flooding in New York City, with water surging onto subway platforms, particularly at the 28th Street Station. The subway system's drainage was overwhelmed, resulting in significant disruptions to transport and swamped major thoroughfares in the city and surrounding areas.

The rainfall, which ranged from two to four inches across regions from Philadelphia to Connecticut, fell within a short timeframe, intensifying the flooding. The flash flood threat remains in the Northeast, as slow-moving thunderstorms and hot, humid conditions continue to pose risks.

All right, take a look at this. Video captured by a passenger on a subway car showing flooding water surging onto the platform there. This is at the 28th Street Station here in New York City. For those of you familiar, this is not what usually happens, of course. Yikes! The subway's drainage system was overwhelmed last night amid all this heavy rain across the Northeast. For more on what's going on here, I'm joined now by CBS News National Weather Correspondent, Rob Marciano. Rob, you're up to your ankles in water. Quite frankly, the subway system here needs a rinse, but explain to us what happened yesterday and what's happening around you now. Yeah, parts of New York always need a bit of a rinse, especially this time of year when it gets hot and steamy. But this time of year, because it's so hot, because it's so steamy, we're in this tropical air mass, and really everybody east of the Mississippi is enduring this, or maybe even east of the Rockies. And it doesn't take much to get a tropical downpour. We had about widespread between two and four inches of rainfall from Philly all the way up into Connecticut. Some areas got a little bit more than that, but it all came in really like two hours' time. So boom, it comes down. You saw what happened in New York City streets and subways. Major thoroughfares swamped across the New York metro area. We're kind of on a side industrial street here that backs up to the Sawmill River Parkway. You can see some of these trucks, they still have water up to their wheel wells. And I'm not going any deeper than this, because as you can imagine, it gets pretty nasty in there. So it's slow going around here, for sure. The sun, though, is coming out, and these waters should recede. But the flash flood threat is not over. This is the time of year where we get it, because July is the hottest time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, and heat can hold more water. And boom, if you get one of these thunderstorms over you, they're very slow moving. This is what can happen, and this is what happened in New York City and much of the Northeast. It seems like everybody east of the Rockies, the last 10 days, has seen some sort of flash flooding. So it's been a long couple of weeks, for sure, Errol. Yeah, yeah, yeah, from Texas to the D.C. area to here in New York City, everybody gets it. So be ready, and get your boots ready, just like Rob. Rob Marciano, thank you very much.
