Maia and Alex Shibutani, sometimes called by their nickname, "Shib Sibs," are two-time Olympic bronze medalists who made history as the first ice dancers of Asian descent to medal in the Olympics. Their comeback is shaped by experiences off the ice, including Maia's battle with kidney cancer in 2019, which she describes as a pivotal and challenging period. Despite not medaling this season, the Shibutanis emphasize personal growth, resilience, and the strength of their sibling partnership as they pursue their Olympic dreams once again.

But we're going to begin this hour with Olympic dreams tomorrow, the U.S. figure skating roster will be announced and it includes 3 ice dance teams. My and Alex shibutani won the bronze medal 7 years ago in Pyeongchang and are trying to make it to Milano Cortina next month. The siblings are known as the ship sims skated their way to 2 national titles, 3 world championship medals and 2 Olympic Games before stepping away from the sport. Now they're lacing up their skates again we spent time with the duo at Chelsea pier sky rink in New York City to talk about their return strengthened by all they've experienced off the ice. For more than 2 decades. My Alex shibutani have built their lives on the ice. The sibling duo had already achieved what most athletes only dream of national titles, world medals. And in 2018 Olympic bronze in Pyeongchang. 7 years later, they're back chasing one more Olympic dream. So why are you guys coming back now. We're back on the ice for fun because it's something that we love doing. We got really into it and it just got to be we felt like we had more to give. We're at a different point in our lives now we have a different perspective. I think some of the creative work that we've done has really allowed us to see our skating in a different way. What are you hoping to prove or explore with this comeback. I don't feel like we have anything to prove, but something that's really undeniable is how grateful I feel to be on the ice with Alex doing something that we love. In 2019, Maya was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She says it gave her the bravery to step back into competition. What was it like when you got that news. It was very shocking, surprising, scary. And as an athlete, I knew what it was like to recover from an injury or something like that. But at the same time, I was in my mid 20s and it kind of came from nowhere. What about the mental challenges? It took so much time for me to kind of recalibrate. And I had such a great support system, learned a lot about balance and my personal values and what I want to do. Through it all, Alex was there. When I found out I was by myself at the doctor's appointment that I needed to have the surgery. So the first call was to our parents and I managed to hold it together. But then the next call was to Alex. And that's just when I completely had my freak out. But it was because I trusted him so much and knew that he'd be able to support me. I mean, you're watching your sister, your partner in both, you know, business and athletics go through something like this. How did that change your relationship? It really was shocking. Skating prepared us a lot for things that we've encountered in life, but it didn't prepare us necessarily for for that experience. This is a moment to cherish. Absolutely. What a performance. We believe our sibling relationship is our greatest strength. There's so much history. There's so many hurdles that we've overcome and that we share. Right. Yeah. We've we've shared so much. That closeness, however, was put under a microscope in October. We spent years talking about this. When a leaked video showed a tense moment during practice. You're raising your voice at Maya. Talk to me about what happened there. We were training and I let my emotions get the best of me and it was wrong. I apologize to Maya, but we kept on going. In our 21 years of skating together, there are challenging moments, but it's who you choose to continue working with. And we are each other's safe space. Seven years away from the sport hasn't made the return easy. The Shibutanis have yet to medal at an event this season. You are looking to get to the Olympics. What happens if you don't? To me, it doesn't matter because I've been chasing this feeling of being a fully realized dimensional person. But on ice, I've experienced so much growth over the past eight years and the ability to share that aspect of myself in this way is the win. Of course, doubt is something that everyone experiences. But between the two of us, the way that we manage it is by confident, confidently stepping forward. This season, they've returned to a familiar Coldplay song they say is emblematic of why they're coming back. Ten years ago, we skated to fix you. And it really feels like being back on the ice together is us returning home. And in the lyrics, there's so many different meanings that resonate with us in new ways and deeper ways. We know who we are and we know what we want to say, but we have the experience now and sort of this special journey that we've been on. It felt like the right choice for us in this moment.
