In our conversation about the crisis facing modern men and boys, educational decline, isolation and loss of purpose, and how society needs to create a new healthy model of masculinity, Reeves suggested a personal action each man can take. There is a boy or a young man in your life, John, who is struggling more than you know and who you should text or call after this conversation to say, how are you doing? And then ask, how are you really doing? Right? I don't know who that is, but every guy who's listening to this conversation has a young man or a boy in his life, whether that's a nephew or a neighbor or a student, who will benefit from them reaching out to them proactively. You have to be proactive. You have to go get them. And you have to ask twice who will benefit from it. This doesn't happen by itself. That reminded me of something a high school teacher of mine once told me. Every child needs an adult they can tell their stuff to. I'd always thought that was wise. I felt it myself, but I never recognized it as an assignment for an adult. There are other calls like that, loneliness, civic decline, mistrust in public life. They share a common failure, people waiting for someone else to reach out first. Reeves' advice, go ask them, ask them twice, isn't just for men and boys. It's a template for showing up for each other.
