China held a large-scale military parade in Beijing, overseen by President Xi Jinping and attended by leaders from more than two dozen countries, including Russia's Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong-un. The parade, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, featured advanced military hardware such as nuclear-armed missiles, hypersonic weapons, and autonomous drones.

The event served both domestic and international purposes, aiming to boost nationalism within China and demonstrate the country's military and diplomatic influence globally. Analysts noted the deepening ties between China, Russia, and North Korea, and discussed China's efforts to present itself as a leader on the world stage, potentially challenging the existing U.S.-led global order.

The message behind China's massive military parade

With the sound of cannons firing across Tiananmen Square, soldiers from the People's Liberation Army goose-stepped in perfect unison, moving as one. This was part of the largest military parade ever to be held in China, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Overseeing his troops under a blazing sun, China's President Xi Jinping. Greetings, comrades. You are working hard, he told them. We love him! And then it was the unveiling of Beijing's new military hardware, nuclear-armed missiles with potential global reach, hypersonic weapons, autonomous underwater drones and laser air defence systems. But this spectacle was more than just commemorating the war dead. It was an opportunity for Xi to take centre stage, flanked by his powerful allies and neighbours, Russia's President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The deepening ties between China, Russia and North Korea would certainly have some in Washington concerned. During his speech, Xi called upon the People's Liberation Army to accelerate its development into a world-class military and, quote, resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. A demonstration of might and capability that has the potential to back up Xi's vision of a new world order. Anna Karin, CBS News, Beijing. National security contributor joins us now. Sam, thanks for being with us here. Quite the show of force there, both by the Chinese military as well as these world leaders coming together. What is the messaging, do you think, coming out of this gathering in Beijing? I think there's a domestic message within China and then there's a global message. Domestically within China, this parade and events over the course of the last few days are all about stoking nationalism, talking about China's history, the founding of the People's Republic of China and really rallying the Chinese people behind the party. That's a domestic message. Globally, the People's Republic of China is trying to show its military might and its dominance, not just in the Asia-Pacific, but globally, as well as China's ability to gather world leaders in a way that, frankly, only the United States had really done well over the past several decades. So globally, China is trying to show its military strength, its convening power, its leadership on the world stage, while domestically trying to really rally the Chinese people from a nationalist perspective. And Sam, on that point, President Trump accused China's Xi Jinping of conspiring against the U.S. with Putin and Kim Jong-un out there. What do you make of those comments? And as you alluded to before, what do you make of Xi's ability to bring these leaders together right now? Are we seeing a new world order come together? China and Russia, for various reasons, have for a long time tried to undermine the U.S.-led liberal democratic order. China and Russia have worked to establish somewhat parallel mechanisms to the ones that the United States has spearheaded, whether it's military alliances, development banks, and more. So we should expect China to continue to try to create an alternative world order, and Russia will continue to try to undermine U.S. dominance globally. They are together as sort of a marriage of convenience. Russia and China have a complicated relationship. They're not necessarily natural friends. They have a lot in common, but they also have a lot of differences that have sparked tensions in the past. What they're working on now is uniting against us and trying to bring not just themselves together, but Central Asian countries, Southeast Asian countries, Pakistan, India, together on their side and to rally against the United States. Yeah, thinking of that adage, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Sam Vinograd, thank you very much for joining us. Thank you.
