Over 450,000 people watched a performance in Abu Dhabi's Etihad Arena last year. To make sure these guests can just sit back and enjoy the show, Manjula Withnij considers every safety measure, both big and small. This involves looking at the drawings, planning staffing, coordinating with other departments, security and safety. Dozens of crew members work up here more than 200 days a year. It's kind of a standard setup. You usually have a gantry or a catwalk for the technical crews or the facility teams to inspect the roof or to access any of the equipment. These walkways are held together by thousands of nuts and bolts. But with constant sound and movement, even a millimeter shift for a single one can be a big problem. Monitoring thousands of small parts might seem like a monumental task. That's why the operations team marks each one with a line. If that line moves, it means the bolt has too. Imagine you have thousands of nuts and bolts. It's not easy for someone to individually inspect. That will take a considerable amount of time. So for ease of operation, we basically use this kind of a method. These inspections aren't unique to the Etihad Arena. Any responsible event space should perform checks like these. Compared to the big acts that come to the arena, these inspections might seem like small details. But they're a vital part of the show because they allow guests to just sit back and enjoy.
