The law aims to allow the use of acetamiprid to protect crops such as beet, hazelnut, cherry, and apple, with supporters arguing that French farmers are at a disadvantage compared to their European counterparts.

Critics, including some members of the European Parliament, warn that France's decision could set a dangerous precedent and bypass efforts to harmonize pesticide regulations across the EU. Concerns have been raised about the pesticide's risks to pollinators and potential impacts on human health, particularly fetal brain development. The European Food Safety Authority has noted significant uncertainties and a lack of data regarding these risks.

With over one and a half million signatures collected in two weeks, the petition against the Duplan law is shaking up the political world. Among other things, the text adopted at the beginning of the month proposes the reintroduction of a pesticide called acetamiprid. For some MEPs, the message sent by Paris to its European partners sets a dangerous precedent. The problem is that France could have, if it took into account the impacts on public health, gone to see its MEPs and say, harmonize our legislation, harmonize our prohibitions, let's do it in a sense of general interest and engage in work in that sense. That's not what France decided to do. France wants to use this substance to protect its beet, hazelnut, cherry and apple crops. Supporters of the law in France's leading farmers' union argue that French producers are at a disadvantage compared to their European counterparts. In the European Parliament, the French right-wing approves the text. They are delighted to see the European Green Pact called into question. The logic that will still weigh on farmers on their productivity, their profitability, is not the right one. You have to choose confidence and you have to do both, produce and produce well. And it is not incompatible. Acetamiprid is dangerous for pollinators such as bees. However, the debate in France also takes into consideration human health, in particular fetal brain development. The European Food Safety Authority is cautious on this point. Last year, it concluded that there were major uncertainties as well as a lack of data.
