The company, valued between $150 and $160 billion and majority-owned by SoftBank, focuses on power-efficient chip designs that are central to mobile phones, AI wearables, and smart devices.

Arm's close ties with academic institutions like Cambridge University have fostered innovation and talent recruitment, contributing to its portfolio of over 8,000 patents. Its chips are found in products ranging from Meta's AI glasses to automated retail systems, underscoring the company's significant influence on the global AI landscape and highlighting Europe's ongoing role in technological advancement.

The chip design company keeping Europe in the global AI race

Welcome back to Marketplace Europe from Vivotech. Well, as you can see, the halls are buzzing. Hundreds of businesses are here, showcasing their products, chasing partnerships, and of course, hunting for new investors. There's one company, though, you're not gonna find a booth for here, even though you'll find their technology is all around us. Where are we gonna find your technology in the halls of Vivotech? Do you even know everywhere it is? Well, you know, we ship 300 billion chips so far, and so you can imagine how every device probably on this show floor, for the most part, in some form or fashion has Arm in them. So we don't know every single device, but it's pretty comprehensive. Arm is one of Europe's largest semiconductor design companies, worth around $150 to $160 billion. And while they don't manufacture themselves, Chief Marketing Officer Ami Badani says they provide the brains that make the chips work. What makes us unique is really around power efficiency. We got our start really in the Apple Newton, and then from there, we've become sort of the ubiquitous compute chip in every single mobile phone that exists today on the market. Founded in the UK in the early 90s, Arm is now listed on the NASDAQ and is majority owned by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank. But its roots run deep here in Cambridge, where more than 4,000 people still work at its global HQ. You look at the UK and Europe, and I think Europe at large, and it's, you know, some brilliant minds, academic institutions, like right down the road in Cambridge or down the way at Oxford. And some of the things that we do with academic institutions being really close to Cambridge is super beneficial for us. So for example, one of the things that we do is the collaboration with research institutions. The other thing is really recruiting the best and the brightest. And you think about some of our engineers and our employees here, a lot of them have come from Cambridge University. So this is our, I like to call it our hall of innovation. And this is where all of our patents that have been granted here in Cambridge. So our first patent was there in 1994, and it extends all the way to 2025. Over the past three decades, Arm has accumulated more than 8,000 patents covering designs for everything from smart thermostats to Meta's AI glasses. Our chips are actually all inside these. So you actually would have never gotten them in such a sleek design without the tiny chips that we have running inside of these. And so it's a really good example of our technology really powering the future of these AI wearables. You know, today it's glasses, who knows what the future holds. Back at Vivitech, just enough time for a quick stop for some groceries. So this is a classic example of, they have a camera up top, which basically is running computer vision models. You need a really power-efficient compute chip to run those language models. Right. And so Arm is one of those computer chips inside that. Inside the camera. Let's give this a go, I'm excited. What pastry would you like? We're in France, you have a panna risa, panna chocolate, a chouille. I think a chocolate croissant. When in Paris, you might as well grab it. All right, so you're gonna pick one up? Pick one up. You can see that the croissant effectively disappeared from the baskets or from the shelf. And then you're able to aggregate all of the data and basically tell your retailer what shelves they need to replenish. The great thing about Arm is, because we work with such a wide variety of customers, we're able to know, you know, three, five years ahead, what some of those technology curves are gonna look like, and then incorporate some of that technology into our roadmap and make that available to the ecosystem. From glasses to groceries, Arm's designs are quietly influencing almost every aspect of our modern tech-driven world, and proving that European innovation still deserves a seat at the table in the global AI race.
