It's been a hectic day for millions of Americans heading home this Thanksgiving weekend with a major winter storm crippling major interstates and leading to delays at airports. Dave Malkoff reports from a busy Chicago O'Hare airport and meteorologist Andrew Kozak has a look at the forecast.

A severe winter storm brought over a foot of snow to the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, leading to significant travel disruptions during the Thanksgiving holiday period. More than 1,800 flights were canceled in Chicago alone, and major highways experienced dangerous conditions, including a 45-car pileup in Indiana. Airports such as Des Moines International were temporarily shut down, and train travel in the Northeast was also affected by mechanical issues.

JetBlue canceled at least 70 flights to update aircraft software, further complicating travel. Meteorologists warn that another storm system is moving east, with snow and rain expected to impact major cities along the East Coast and bring additional travel delays. Cold temperatures are forecast to follow, with wind chills in Chicago potentially dropping to single digits.

The weather is having a major impact on travelers. A big snowstorm dropped a lot of snow across the Midwest, crippling major interstates and leading to delays at airports with ripple effects nationwide. CBS's Dave Malkoff leads us off tonight from a very busy Chicago O'Hare Airport. Dave. Jerrica, there is a lot of frustration here because there have been more than 1,800 flight cancellations just in Chicago just this weekend. We had a big winter storm here and that has complicated travel for millions of Americans. More than a foot of snow came down over parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes regions over this wintry weekend, generating dangerous conditions for drivers and air travelers alike. Des Moines International Airport was shut down on Sunday after an airplane slid off the taxiway overnight. Yesterday was the snowiest November day on record in Chicago, more than eight inches at O'Hare Airport. That's where we met Vanessa Robichaux and Ed Wittnaber. I've never seen this much snow because we're from Mississippi. So this is our first time seeing this much snow. So that was awesome, but I didn't realize it would cause so many delays. They got to the airport at 3 a.m. for a 5 a.m. flight. We were supposed to land at 9.30 this morning at home, so. And it is- It's already- 2 p.m. central time. And the next flight they booked us on would leave at 9.45 tonight. Yeah. 73 million drivers are expected on the roads over the week of Thanksgiving. Heavy snowfall led to this 45-car pileup near Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday, and train travel was temporarily interrupted in the Northeast today when mechanical issues caused a passenger rail car to catch fire in Providence, Rhode Island. And weather isn't the only thing complicating the travel home right now. JetBlue had to cancel at least 70 flights today because they need to update the aircraft software in their A320 and A321 fleet, Tariqa. Yeah, safety is important. Dave Malkoff, thank you. There's a new storm threat headed east. CBS News meteorologist Andrew Kozak is tracking that part with details on what you can expect. Yeah, that's right. Good evening, Tariqa. We are already seeing the effects of winter, and we still have it officially about three weeks away. Tonight, we're watching winter alerts across the Midwest as snow continues to pile up for areas like the Four Corners states. And then as we head into the week ahead, the big story is gonna be this developing system to the south. It's nice in New England on Monday, plenty of sunshine, but this area of low pressure, not quite a nor'easter, needs to bring in that constant northeast wind. We'll just call it a messy system. It's gonna bring rain to the south, snow to the north, and as we head into Tuesday, even the big cities, Philadelphia, down toward D.C., and New York may see some snow starting off before the changeover to rain. This likely is going to impact travel across the East Coast as we head into your Tuesday and Tuesday afternoon. Inland, just northwest of the major cities, we could be looking at six to 12 inches of snow. That's part one. Then part two is the cold temperatures coming down Wednesday into Thursday. Places across the Great Lakes, like Chicago, could have wind chills in the single digits. Bundle up this week. Jerica? Definitely will. Andrew Kozak, thank you.
