A gunman who killed a former Cambodian lawmaker in Bangkok was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Thai court on Friday.
Lim Kimya, a former politician from the dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, was shot dead near a temple.

Pernoi was quickly apprehended and extradited from Cambodia after fleeing the scene, and his death sentence was commuted to life due to his cooperation and confession during the trial.

Despite the conviction, the victim's family expressed frustration over the investigation, believing it did not fully uncover who ordered the killing. The case underscores a broader pattern of targeted attacks on political dissidents in Southeast Asia, with many cases remaining unresolved and families left without closure.

Early January in broad daylight, close to one of Bangkok's busiest tourist streets, shots ring out, but no one reacts. Dying on the ground in a pool of blood, distant Cambodian politician Lim Kim Nga. As police investigated, the trail of evidence was clear. The killer, Ekalak Pernoi, a disgraced former Thai Marine, was quickly extradited from Cambodia where he had fled. Nine months later, after a trial lasting only three days, a guilty verdict and death sentence commuted to life for his cooperation and confession. For the victim's family, however, frustration that the investigation was, to them, superficial. I feel they are still lacking on the, still more information that the police, the investigation could do for this case, to give a real closure to the family, so they know what really happening and who was the one that ordered this. And little chance that other suspects with allegedly close connections to Cambodian leadership will be brought before the court. For the Thai justice system, this was an open and shut case. A crime caught on video, a killer who confessed. But in what was clearly a politically motivated assassination, the verdict has given us no better idea of who was behind the man who pulled the trigger. Targeted attacks on political dissidents and activists in Southeast Asia are on the rise. Thai pro-democracy campaigner Wan Chalerm Satsak Sit was seized on the streets of Phnom Penh in 2020. He hasn't been seen since. Despite public pressure, investigations in Cambodia and Thailand have either stalled or yielded no results. I wouldn't say obstructing per se, but they are trying to avoid beginning the investigation. Like, for Thailand, they keep saying that we are doing something, the progress is ongoing. For Lim Kim Ya's family, at least the knowledge that his killer is now behind bars. But for families and friends of the deported and disappeared across Southeast Asia, such a sense of closure is rare. Tony Cheng, Al Jazeera, Bangkok.
